but I'm not getting anywhere. Supposedly I have to open up these cgi files in a text editor, and then upload them in ASCII form. I don't know the first thing about doing ANY of this... someone help me out here?

Don't stress!
To open a cgi file in a text editor, load notepad, goto file --> open, change files of type to all files, then find the file and open it.
You'll probably have to enter certain information into the cgi file, such as your server name, database name and so on. Follow the instructions provided and check out your web-host's site for the relevant details.
Save the file with it's original extension (eg .pl)
If you have web-based uploading, just upload the file to your web space like an html file, making sure you place it in the right folder (probably cgi-bin). You don't have to do anything different with cgi files - the ASCII mode thing is taken care of automatically.
If you upload via FTP, get a good program such as cuteFTP and the mode will be set automatically to ASCII.
I hope I explained the uploading thing in enough detail. Any problems, just post again or mail me.
Good luck!
