Linking to competition allows both sites to get more hits since a user may become a regular at both sites.

Here's the eternal paradox of reciprocal linking:



You want to exchange links with another site to attract visitors because your site is just starting up.

No established site will exchange links with you, because you'd be the only one to gain. They're not getting anything from it except the slim chance that your site might become popular in the future (at which point you can kiss your link goodbye).

So, only other startups will exchange links with you. But of course, they don't have any traffic. That's why they want to exchange links with you...

...little do they know that you don't have any traffic either.



The only way a reciprocal link really works is if both sites are already established and just want to exchange a customer base. Reciprocal links for traffic rarely pan out.
