View Full Version : interesting about all 4 letter GK domains...

Cyber

all 4 letter domains starting with GK have been registered by the same person, but never developed. The nameservers are all set to mydomain.com. I'm sure he wouldn't mind if you used one, becuase its been undeveloped for a year already. weird huh?

why not use one, just email him and ask, i think he will say its all right.

Do you really think so? I doubt he will just let you use it.

Then why ask? Just use it anyway.

How can one use the domain of another one?

Bruce
September 9th, 2001, 15:26
Because this guy has them all pointed to mydomain's nameservers, but he doesn't have them in his domain list.

keith
September 9th, 2001, 15:32
what are you talking about, i found a ton of four letter domains starting with 'gk' that are unregistered

Cyber
September 9th, 2001, 15:32
strange that he would do that, huh?

Bruce
September 9th, 2001, 15:33
only the .com are registered.

Cyber
September 9th, 2001, 15:34
keith, all 4 letter domains STARTING with GK, and all letters.

Bruce
September 9th, 2001, 15:38

Cyber
September 9th, 2001, 15:40
is anyone gonna use one?

Bruce
September 9th, 2001, 15:45
Why not? Maybe I'll go grab 1 or 3 or 20.

keith
September 9th, 2001, 15:47
ha, i've gotten about 5 or 6. not that i'll ever use them. that's about all i need.

Cyber
September 9th, 2001, 16:57
lol. I got the best one!! I found that he had GMBY.com too. :biggrin2: so evil :fork:

Cyber
September 9th, 2001, 17:16
i've been typing in domains starting with "kg" or "gk" and some others, and I found that he owns around 500. I really don't think he will care if we use just one.

Raihan
September 9th, 2001, 17:18
what dya mean all 4 letter gk domains are pointed to mydomain, i tried gkab, gkcd and others and none are pointed to mydomain. of course the only reason that im looking for them is that i want one of my own.

god i feel dirty today :confused2

try something like GKGW.com or GKRE.com, etc.
Also try domains starting with "KG" or "GM"

Well if 500 of us take one then I think he might care.

Gayowulf

can these only be taken within mydomain?

Bruce
September 9th, 2001, 17:36
Yeah becasue the domains are already pointed to mydomain's nameservers.

Cyber
September 9th, 2001, 17:43
and you can't exactly change his nameservers...

LastActionHero

This is a serious security breach on the part of mydomain. I think I'll write to their support and let them know.

Cyber

Basically, I don't think you're allowed to just take his domain and use it. Like what if you used it to point to some porn/warez/crack site? Then if the FBI or whatever finds out, the guy who owns the domain will be in big trouble, and so will the people who used his domains.

Not that I care if you get a phone call from the CIA or whatever... Just keep in mind that this isn't exactly legal...

Hello
What the owner of these domains has done is called "lame delegation".
He used the names of name servers in his domainapplications but then didn't set up zone files for them.
This is considered bad practice for a number of reasons, nit least because it allows whoever has access to those name servers to control where the name points.

A lesson to us all.....

oh LeX, i wouldn't use if for porn or warez. just for games and d/ls. maybe some roms using GMBY.com.

you can't say its so illegal.

GordonH-does that mean its legal/illgegal, or just a bad mistake?

GordonH
September 10th, 2001, 16:05
Lame delegation is considered bad practice because it means that requests for DNS info go unanaswered and other people can potentially get control of your domains.

There's nothing I'm going to do to prevent you from using them, I'm just warning you of the possibilities.

Cyber

there is no way to find out who is using them that i know of.

I got this reply from Mydomain.com. Apparently until the owner of the domain doesn't object , it's legit

This is not a security issue. Anyone can add whichever domain they like to their account. If they are the correct owner, then so much the better.

If the owners wish to use our forwarding service, and can't add the domain because someone else added it to their own account, we will do a quick confirmation check, and move the domains to the correct accounts.

Since we support ALL ICANN domains, it would be impossible to have an automatic system check who is allowed to add which domain to their account. The reason for this being, that a lot of different registrars maintain poor and uninformative whois databases, which can not be queried.

It has been told all over this thread (well, the first page or two).

Seriously speaking, though, do keep in mind that this type of action is like driving away somebody else's car whose owner happened to leave it unlocked with the keys in the car at his home.

Cyber
September 14th, 2001, 15:39
but this is the internet, not a car!

Canuckkev
September 14th, 2001, 17:36
Okay...500 domains? A lot if you ask me. Why should he care? If you get actual traffic, then he can just take back the domain, and send it to some 'portal' site (ie. clickheretofind.com), and he can make some moola. I find it pointless to get one of these domains, because I am doubting they will be re-newed.

all 4 letter domains starting with GK have been registered by the same person, but never developed. The nameservers are all set to mydomain.com.Which means that all you have to do is add an empty domain name to your account at MyDomain and you have control of it as long as the nameservers are pointed to mydomain.

Posted by Phrozen
not .net or .org though. So that means no .net or .org domains were registered and pointed to mydomain by the registeree (is that how you call 'em?).

See? All you had to do was browse the first two pages and you have all the answers to your questions. Not very hard to do is it?
