alright what do i use to compress these files i can't use winzip i know that...

I'm pretty sure Winzip works...
But if it really doesn't you can use PowerArchiver, found at this address:

I don't think WinZip can create them...only open them.

if you dont believe try downloading and compressing clickity click (http://www.quarks.com.au/phpNewsCenter/)
and powerarchiver doesn't seem to work

Winzip will decompress those files. Not quite sure what you want us to download and compress though.

yah heh i meant decompress them and i didn't want you guys to download anything i just said that if you dont believe that winzip doesn't decompress the tar.gz files then download it and try to decompress it with winzip

Well I know Winzip 8.0 DOES decompress tar.gz files. I don't know about previous versions though.

Open up winzip, go to options>configuration>system>association

I don't see anything suitable in Options. Maybe it's a choice during installation. Try to associate WinZip with the file type. Far shot...

i did that and they're all checked, when i download a tar.gz file it shows up as "<filename>.tar.gz" and thats it

Just open up the Winzip executable and click on open.
At the thing on the bottom, choose "All Files (*.*)" then go to the folder with your tar.gz file. It should be uncompressed.
I believe WinZip first ungz's the file. Then you get a filename.tar file, you have to untar that by doing the same thing said above to filename.tar

when i try that it says its not a valid archive...
