2000 & XP should be 2 different options :/

I would have to agree with Phrozen, FreeBSD is probably the best I've used yet.

I wouldn't know which os would be my favourite...I've only used Win 95.

I've never touched Windows 3.1 and Unix and Linux, tried Mac OS once, but used to use MS-DOS and Windows 95 A, now using Windows 95 B, Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows Millenium Edition(my present PC)

Well, I like Win98 SE more than WinME doesn't hang that much. But for features, I'd like WinME and Win98 combined together as Win98 had Internet Tools unlike WinME.

Except FreeBSD and BeOS and Win 2000/XP, I have used all operating systems. Even QNX. The best has been Linux. Never tried FreeBSD , people do say it's very good, but for the desktop?

MacOS is super too, for a newbie the learning curve is very small and the new OS X based on *nix must be super too although I haven't used it.
I voted Linux.

Windows 3.1? **scoff** I started with TRSDOS and it's still my favorite. It's probably the best OS ever written... for the TRS-80, anyway. Granted, I'd never actually use it, but that's not what you asked, you asked for my favorite. TRSDOS (pronounced "triss-dah-ss", not "tee-are-ess-dee-oh-ess", that really annoys me when people say that  ).

I remember Windows 3.1, my first "modern" computer ran it. I didn't have one back in the days of DOS-only, though, but I do remember using computers that just ran DOS in school.

Windows 2000 is both easy to use, and stable as heck.

Yeah, Win2000 is good. I'll still probably dual-boot with it, but I'm not a Windows fan after last night.

How dare you put ME in the same group as win95? I protest!

You probably should have specified Server or Desktop, but I'm guessing Desktop was implied here (I don't know of many servers running DOS/Win 3.11).

In either case, though, I say Linux all the way. I do keep Windows 2000 on a partition of one box just for Unreal Tournament, Quake, Half Life, etc, but other than that, I run two RedHat 6.2 boxen, two RedHat Roswell beta boxen, and one FreeBSD 4.3 box.

I also agree that Windows 2000 and XP should be separate. Some of the base code is the same (most of which ripped from FreeBSD ;)), but there are fundamental differences. A lot of people won't touch XP, what with it phoning home with its "Activation" process, and all the other stuff they're allegedly doing to it... XP is what finally prompted me to migrate all of my home systems to Linux, and I couldn't be happier :)

PS -- regarding ME and 9x, I would group those together myself. ME (on the couple occasions I messed with it) seems like Win98 + Media Player 7 + all windows updates... oh, and minus some stability...
