ISP troubles? :confused2

September 16th, 2001, 22:07
Gayowulf, I had the exact same problem, its not the fault of your ISP. It's got something to do with your modem, modem driver or settings. Just fiddle around with stuff...

Although, my solution was to get a new modem and now its working fine! ;)

See, now you got help. You know you don't get any attention on your own! :hurt2:

I got similar problems when I was on dial-up, but I was hacking a free internet service provider's banners. I guess they found out.

I had a problem where I connected to the ISP but no websites would respond in IE.

The solution was to reinstall the correct version of winsock - an AOL free trial disk ( :o ) had overwritten it with a newer version.

got the same problem with my sucking broadband modem. I'm on 56K currently, fed up with that broadband modem.

My broadband modem:
Hangs my PC
Can't upload big files
Connection dies out before I get disconnected, sometimes even when it is the 1st second I get connected!

My Lucent 56K modem:
Doesn't hang my PC
Can upload very big files
Connection never die out on me before

LeX

My 56K:
Has never worked.

My broadband:
Has downloaded and uploaded well over 10GBs.

Have you tried one of those keep-alive things? But perhaps this isn't related to you being idle?

Gayowulf
September 17th, 2001, 16:22
no it just disconnects suddenly and without warning.

=THanks Are you serious? The domain name you wanted other people to buy for you was at least partially reasonable, but buying and building a computer for you is out of the question. It's just plain stupid. Just build it yourself.

10 Things you could try:

1) Re-Install Windows.

2) Get Win2K or XP.

3) ..or get *nix or something else.

4) Bang your computer's case (about 6 times).

5) Boot your computer out the window.

6) In addition to no. 5, make sure the window is elavated at least 20 stories.

7) Take your computer to a incinerator.

8) Sue your Cable company for dodgey cable.

9) Spend $5000 on a new computer.

10) Ditch the whole "computer" idea.

I know $5000 is a bit steep, it's very very steep. It's called a "joke".

..and yes I could build a AMD system for $900 AUD too.

I love Australia, don't you?

RDram or SDRAM?

I say an AMD. No doubt about it. But go for DDR SDRAM.

Now help me on this one: I have decided i will buy it from www.ipc.ca So far that is the cheapest place i have found.

Do you know of any similar type places. They would have to be canadian though. also that ipc site has an option to choose the components and stuff that you want. Help me choose. I dont know a whole lot about computers. my budget would be <$1800

Verizon ADSL vs Dialup:

Connecting to service-
Verizon: 10 minutes
Verizon phone lines: 27 seconds

Average speed:
Verizon: 30 Kbps
Verizon phone lines: 40 Kbps

Lag periods:
Verizon: 10 seconds to 30 minutes
Verizon phone lines: None during the connection to 35 seconds

Gayowulf

yes.

whats better 512mb of SDRAM or 128 of RD?

Bruce
September 18th, 2001, 19:32
128mb of sdram is better than 128mb rdram. Stay away from Rambus memory. It's going to be discontinued shortly anyway.

Here's a site I just came across.
http://www.ncix.com

LastActionHero
September 19th, 2001, 04:34
Discontinued is not the word. Towards the end of this year Intel will the change the P4 slot and will have support for DDR SDRAM. So it just makes sense to wait until the year end to go for a P4 since if you buy now you will not be able to upgrade it without changing your m/b.

And I'm predicting the P4 will get cheaper because of support for DDR RAM. So the RDRAM will soon die out.

While the RDRAM from rambus is a super technology and very fast it is just too expensive.

Bruce
September 19th, 2001, 05:08
Well DDR SDRAM is faster and cheaper.

Gayowulf
September 19th, 2001, 13:13
good tips, thanks.

whats the difference between all those rams?

Bruce
September 19th, 2001, 13:41
SDRAM (100-133mhz) is standard for most computers. DDR SDRAM (Double Data Rate 200-266mhz) is twice the speed of standard SDRAM. As of now it's only used in Athlons (and some Durons). Intel will be switching to DDR SDRAM for their P4's sometime soon. Until then P4's are using RDRAM (Rambus) which is faster than the standard SDRAM, but also much more pricey.

Giancarlo
September 19th, 2001, 15:54
Not that I am right or anything, but I heard RDRAM is rather unstable?

I have PC133 SDRAM.. it is good enough for anybody, and is dirt cheap. I can put up to 1.5GB of it in (and my MB does support DDR but it is too expensive). :D

I will always recommend, and never stop recommending you always get a computer with the GIGABYTE 7ZXR Motherboard (or something like that) when buying an AMD CPU... it is very stable, and one of the best on the market based on personal experience. And it has Dual Bios and a mirroring thing that can have a secondary hard drive without problems.

heh, i picked a good motherboard, im running an AMD Duron 750mhz. but not all of the GIGABYTE 7ZX models have dual bios.

i no the 7ZX rev 5.x has dual bios (thats wat i use....) but i can remember seeing many others with it.....
