Unlike some I have put some thought into this. On the technical side, I don't know much. Don't worry though, I will get professional staff or just learn it myself(if I do learn it myself, you should be worried ;)) Financially I have 2000 dollars a month to spend. This should be more than enough to cover bandwidth costs. I buy all my hardware wholesale, so it's cheaper.
I will offer this:
25mb
user placeable banners
cgi, ssi, php, asp and a mySQL DB
no telnet
2gb bandwidth limit
hopefully a fast connection(not using cable or dsl) Might be a T1 or 3
bonuses for sites with quality content AND hits
domain support
I'm not talking BS, it will come to be. I promise you.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you need ChilliSoft ASP (I think that's it...) to do this, and I think I recall hearing that it's a pain in the --- to setup and is fairly expensive.
Somebody kick me if I'm wrong :p

You may get more sign ups but I say he might stay in it for longer then you.

December 17th, 2000, 18:32
Well just see who lasts longer, how about that?
I also think I'll get more sign-ups too, I have many other services I will offer and I will launch an ad campaign

WOW! I have an idea!!
Someone start an online betting service.->I wanna be in on this one.
(Whoever allows warez and porn will get the most signups)

Who to bet one. Pretty close call to go on. Probably be a much safer bet to add mine to the list and just bet on it...LOL. However, It would be nice to see two new fwp's at each others throats and trying to outdo each other to see if it creates a harder and longer standing, but reliable fwp in the end.
Ok, Shawn, Johnny....you're our guinea pigs, go for it!

December 17th, 2000, 20:01
Let Jhonny do whatever he wants....
I'm sticking to the features I said i'm offering, I'm not going to add more features just to beat out another FWP and go broke. No thanks.
Plus the features I got, only a few FWP have them or better.

I would probably go with the 2GB bandwidth one, a normal site probably won't need that much bandwidth. Also, Shawn's server is probably going to be much faster because warez servers, which chew up 99% of most host's bandwidth, don't work with the 2GB limit. Good luck with your server sHaWn!

O BTW I don't accept warez site.

If you did this you wouldn't be offering truly unlimited bandwidth now would ya?

It is 'limited' unlimted. I do enjoy when people attempt to explain this oxymoron. *sigh*

I think that what Johnny means by "monitoring bandwidth" is that if a site is using a lot of bandwidth, he will check it to see if it is/isn't a warez site, and if it is, he will delete it. This does NOT count against true unlimited bandwidth; warez is ILLEGAL and should anyone have to host illegal sites? Do you want to get your host arrested?

Do both of you force your members to put ad banners ???
If not... I will join :)

Banners are mandatory!
I will use the same system as virtual ave. and hypermart.
If the user fails to put the banner code on the page, a pop-up will come up with the ad. Plus there won't be anything on your page that says your hosted by us, except for the url.

Good luck to you both.
Shawn
What script did you use to POP UP the banner and if the user puts the banner code in the POP UP doesn't apear?
I'm going to start free hosting as well.
Basically
I'm going to get T1
My parents own Cyber World buildings several places in my area. They are going to use T1 so
what the heck
I'll just purchase some computers and make them into servers.
but without any banners..
I guess this should compensate for the speed...
And I don't want to use crappy scripts like HOME FREE and COMMUNITY WEAVER. I want to offer people mySQL, PHP, CGI-BIN,.... you know.. after I purchase mySQL, PHP, etc
I need the script............

First off, you can offer cgi & PHP with those scripts, you just have to hack them and build in the code for it.
>>after I purchase mySQL, PHP, etc
I'll assume your joking since we know these are all free (-:

Scary thing is, I don't think so. Also note that 'computers' don't necessarily make robust servers. I suggest buying or building a server, not getting personal computers and paying for free software. *wink*

Ok, I ahve all the hardware now.
I have 3 servers now, custom built. Each has these features:
256mb of ram
dual pentium 3 733mhz
40gb HD, *one has 2 40gb HD
512k cache
* the server with the dual 40gig HD's will be for quality sites.
I basically need some software anda connection now.
what do you guys thing of the hwardware. Oh, and I'm hoping of using UNIX as the operating sys, as I know what a ----- NT can be, and win 2000 doesn't appeal to me.
what do you guys suggest?

sHaWn, justto let you know that script that VirtualAve uses is very easily hackable. I have tested it out and any user can disable all banners by jus placing one line of HTML. I don't know about Hypermart though, but I bet their the same also.
Just be careful which type of script you use for your banners ;)

MySQL is NOT free for commercial use, be it for profit or non-profit. As long as it is not for PERSONAL use, MySQL is NOT free.

Time to open up your pocketbook again, because if you're not going to use Windows NT, you're going to have to pay a pretty penny for Chili!Soft ASP, at least to the best of my knowledge...

ASP is a feature that I might re-consider, but if it comes to be a HUGE necessity, I'll purchase it.

From the MySQL manual, section 3.3.3:
"If you use MySQL in conjunction with a Web server on Unix, you don't have to pay for a license.
This is true even if you run a commercial Web server that uses MySQL, because you are not selling an embedded MySQL version yourself.
However, in this case we would like you to purchase MySQL support, because MySQL is helping your enterprise. "
MySQL support starts at EURO 170 (basic e-mail support) and goes up to EURO 5000 for extended login support.
And of course, there's always Postgres, which I believe is completely free.
As for software, my vote is for Debian Linux. Or perhaps a Bastilled version of Red Hat.

I don't know much about Linux myself, I'm a Windows guy myself...but ASP seems to be in a lot smaller demand than other web languages.
I'd get rid of SSI though, SSI generally slows down servers...

Surecities used Linux servers thinking they were just as stable as Unix. Look at them now (if you didn't know, they are totally messed up). However, other places that use Linux seem to be pretty stable. Maybe it's the configuration. Be sure to configure the things correctly, or the server may not work properly.

Dreamhost uses Debian linux, which is reputed to be pretty darned secure for servery stuff. Then again, it's being constantly rewritten and updated by like 500 ravenous opensource geeks, so it can get hard to maintain if you forget to run aptget...
Other people insist that Linux is for desktop machines and *BSD is for servers, but blah. As long as your firewall is set up correctly and you make users choose ridiculously obfuscatious passwords, Linux will do nicely, I think.

SSI is a feature I think is REALLY needed if you're running scripts, except for scripts that don't need to be inbedded like a message board.
I've made up my mind and chose to use UNIX servers. Many host owners are telling me how reliable it is.
ASP will be added. I have some cash, might as well get some extra users who want ASP.

if you support php, then ssi is not really nessasary, because php includes works just as well, or better.

SSI is needed for CGI. CGI "MIGHT" die out soon, considering who good php is. I'd rather support all three, ssi, php and cgi.

Wow, this treads getting long. Anyway someone asked where you can get linux servers? I'd recomend http://www.valinux.com, but the prices can get a little high, but whats included makes it worthwhile.
Generally any UN*X based operating system makes a good server. Its not just BSD and Linux, you have IRIX, True64, Solaris, etc. too.
While im catching up on posts to this group, the one who wanted to host a fwp on a t1 line should probably rethink his choice. I have a strange feeling that your line will get saturated pretty quickly.

With that in mind you then ask to be a moderator? So much for being a HELPFUL source rather than demoralising other members?
