Sounds great except the 'upgrading to me' part. Does anyone else find that a horrible operating system? I installed the update on my computer and removed it 8 days later.

I got the upgrade CD from Gateway, upgraded, and had a few problems (especially with ScanDisk) and I ended up reformatting my HD and putting back Win98.

Right now though, Windows Me is on my old PC (200mhz, 32mb ram) and there are no problems at all, though I don't use it much so I wouldn't really know.

According to tests, Windows Me is 5-10% slower and 5-10% less stable than its Win98 counterpart. Try getting Windows 2000, it's really good!

Actually I love it... I've had it on my new computer for two weeks now and I have yet to crash it, or lock it up. Best Windows yet, other than NT/2000! :)

My computer needs more RAM anyway... I can't believe they sold it with only 32MB... WinME is the most stable one, so far...

I just got it a little over 3 weeks ago:

Pentium IV 1.4 ghz
128 MB RDRAM
40 GB Hard Drive
CD-rw (forgot the exact specs, but it writes/records at 8x)
DVD-ROM (16X/40X)
19 inch monitor

We have two other computers that we bought in the past 6 years, but both were middle-of-the-road macintoshes when we bought them. The iMac still works good for basic things, so my sister primarily use it. The other one is the macintosh equivilent of a 386. It's pretty much a glorified word processor, heh.

We were going to only get a Pentium III 1 ghz, but Dell was running some special you'd get a free DVD upgrade from a CD-Rom, and free ground shipping. My dad called up Gateway on the phone and got them to match Dell's price (Gateway has a service center just 2 miles from our house, so we figured it's be a lot easier if we had problems with the PC). There was also no sales tax on our machine since there are no taxes on goods purchased over the phone in Nebraska.

So in the end we had no sales tax, and no shipping charges. That saved us like 250 bucks right there, plus the DVD upgrade probably saved us another 100+ or so.

In the end we only wound up paying like 100 bucks more for what we normally would've paid for a PIII system with all the features we had.

One thing i learned though is if you're gonna order from Gateway *do not* do it through the country store. Do it through the internet or over the phone. Most states don't charge sales tax for stuff bought over the phone or the net, but if you buy it at a country store, they will charge you. And also since the salespeople sell stuff on commision, they won't bargain w/ you. But you can usually haggle w/ the people on the phone :0 And the country store always tries to throw in all this excess crap. We went there before even looking on the net, and their prices were really really expensive. THen I looked at the spec sheet and they threw in all this crap like online training for 200 bucks, and some stupid software bundles that we didn't need. Don't shop at gateway country, or you'll likely get raped

Woah! Where did you copy that from? I wanna find out that much about my computer too!

my dad announced after the cable guy said our computer was too old for cable that we're getting another one.. we recently got an athlon 900 but thats going with my sister when she goes to college.. and we have a pentium III 500 and another amd k6-2 266 (rather old).. we wanted to install cable on the k6-2 because it runs winNT 4.0 server so we could network.. but the guy couldn't..

so now we need a new server to network the internet and my dad is getting another compaq presario amd athlon 1.1ghz its a little bit better than the 900 because instead of 30gb it has 60gb and it has a 16x dvd-rom instead of a 40x cd-rom and it has an 40x8x6x cd-rw.. it also has a 32mb nvidia tnt2 agp graphics card instead of the 8mb nvidia tnt2 agp graphics card..

costs $1,149 i think

MAN you guys are lucky. My dad got a comp in 1999 at a really expensive price. Well, actually, it was an all-performance thing laptop, so I suppose that's the reason for the extra bucks. No discounts either.

Specs:
Acer TravelMate 720 Pent II
233MHz (not sure, could be more or less)
64 MB RAM
6 GB HD
MAT----A 24X CD-ROM (you ever heard of that company? I haven't)
Lucent Win 56K Modem (never used)
15" Built-in Monitor up to 1024x768 True Color
NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AV Audio
NeoMagic Magic 3DX Sound System <-- Fuktup, one day I woke up to find that no sound whatsoever comes out of the speakers anymore (yes, the speakers were ok) yet the comp says that it's still working...
Synaptics Touchpad 5.0.18
Win98
A bag

Later on, my dad bought a YAMAHA CD burner, 4x4x16, which we're using to this day, and a Logitech 3 button mouse. He also brought home a real keyboard. We connect to the net using an external modem, not sure of its specs, it's company name is Tecom. It's faster than the 56K.

Sad, ain't it? And I'm using it right now. Well, beats my old computer, which my dad was forcing me to use until he finally decided a few months ago that it's too out-dated. Anybody interested to know how good the old one was?

Specs:
Packard Bell 486 DX2/60MHz
4 MB RAM (with ONE extra slot for you to upgrade, and my dad installed another 4 MB)
8??MB HD, with a third of it used up by Win 3.1 and later on half of it eaten by Win95, leaving less than 400 MB for me to use. Of course, the other 400 MB was ONLY Win95, not including all the "necessary" softwares installed.
2X CD-ROM (forgotten what company's, I think it was Panasonic's)
15" Packard Bell monitor w/ nailed soundblaster on the sides of it
14.4 Modem
DAMNED Packard Bell Mouse, it's weak, broke almost the moment I started using it, and it's LOUD!
Packard Bell Standard 101 Keyboard - FU(KING SPACE BAR broke the moment I pressed it, and it's NOISY too!!!
Win 3.1 for Workgroups - it's actually more stable than 95/98/ME, with my experience. I'm not sure about NT/2000, haven't seen one in action yet. Too bad it wasn't very powerful.

How I managed to use it after all these years I don't know. So you can guess how happy I was when I was finally able to touch a decent computer. Which is like, at the end of the line now. *sigh*
