1. i need a good fast host .. who can put up with around 1 - 2 gigs of transfer EVERY MONTH .. and then a download host which doesn't mind me using around 4 gigs of transfer EVERY MONTH.

BTW -

do u recon if i setup a couple of unix servers with the following specs on a ds-1 ( T1 ) i would get many users ????

amd 1.4ghz thunderbird
512mb pc133 ram
2 x 80gig ide hd
2 x 10mbit ethernet cards
freebsd 4.3
php 4
perl 5
tcl
python
apache web server
bind dns

i only have 2 pcs with that spec .... so the connections should be fast ... btw - i would probally use wu-ftp .. unless there is better ????

What do u all think of this package .. if i do deside to go with it .

5mb webspace ( more on request )
un-metered data-transfer
CGI-BIN ( on request )
PHP 4 ( safe mode = on )
yourname.mydomain
FTP
SSI
E-mail Forwarding ( on request )

All this for free .. with 1 ad per page ( code supplied ) [ button ]

I'd take out the unmetered and put something like 3 gigs.

Could you maybe offer more space? say 10mb? I suppose that may be harder to offer

I doubt it ever existed with those requirements. No such thing as "Unmetered"

Well, you're right, it never existed, cause he hasn't created it yet.

What's the matter with him offering "unmetered" data transfer? It's not like his members are going to use that much transfer if he only allows them 5 mb space to work with.

OK , there is no such thing as un-metered ... you really believe that ?? ... un-metered means .. i will not restrict a account to something like 64kbps .... they will get UN-METERED use of my t1 ... thought the connection is not un-metered ... it is far from it ... i'm actually gonna offer un-metered use ... and offer 3gb per account could be a prob .. cos i could not offer that to each an every member .. if i get quite alot ... cos a t1 can transfer up to around 160gb per month ( at full connection / 24/7 )

And i suppose . i could upgrade accounts from 5meg to 10meg .. on request .:D

If you read :

5mb webspace ( more on request ) :classic2:

Exactly. Unmetered = within the capabilities of the host server.

Another example of ridiculous claims is Spaceports' 20 gb monthly transfer. I bet if every one of their 600,000+ members really used that much transfer per month, they'd be out of business.

You all can make up whatever definition you'd like, but when you talk about offering 3GB/account, then there has to be something limiting it somewhere.

The *only* time unmetered works is when the site/server has been throttled to a certain bandwidth level (64kbp/s via script or switch), or the line capacity (a T1 for example), or by hardware (the nic card or switch is not capable of transferring more than a certain amount).

You are not offering the full T1 to anyone, thus it is not unmetered (which is a good choice). If I gave you a server and you hooked it up to a T1 and you said, "Get whatever you can out of it..." - that would be unmetered.

Not metering the amount of bandwidth a site uses or a server uses is just plain idiotic, as you run the great chance that one or more sites will take advantage or just use up the whole connection. I sure wouldn't put a site on a server run in this manner.

OK - We'll i would like to point out .. that i'm not gonna get that many users .. and any user who would use alot of bandwidth .. ie : illegal file storage, downloads , mp3s , vidz - are all not allowed DISK SPACE content... so the data-transfered between your account / site and the visitor .. is un-metered as long as no terms and conditions are broken. AND i'm also gonna point out .. that i didn't talk about offer 3gb per account .. i said i could not offer that .. when someone said don't offer un-metered ... offer about 3gb per month .
