ok here is my problem, whenever i try to view a picture or access stuff like the control panel my computer freezes up, sometimes only for 30 seconds to a minute sometimes longer, and sometimes i get the message "There was a problem sending the command to the program" when trying to view pictures. does any one have any idea what may be causing this? i thought it might have been memory but i have no problem accessing mpeg and mp3 files. thanks

what operating system. cause if youhave win2k and you hit ctrl+alt+del and you can view cpu usage. sometimes your cpu is being used up 100% by a program and that might cause the error. or if you have an emulator running (i don't ever) that can cause a lot of problems.

nope its windows 98 second edition i think. p2 350 with 128 megs of ram and 3 gigs of free space. this problem just started after almost 3 years of using this computer, its not a virus because i have the most up to date norton.

Because of the economic slowdown, prices are dropping so you might want to consider an upgrade. One site I shop from is www.newegg.com.

He doesn't really need to upgrade. His machine is still perfectly capable.

Yeah, but things are getting cheap.

Have you checked that the problem isn't with the program associated with those image formats? Can you open them in another app without problem?

i uninstalled the program i usually use to view pics, ACDSee. and i get the same problem when i try and access them from windows explorer using IE but when i type in the address of the pic into the browser i can access them no problem. Also it freezes up for abour 30 seconds when i try and access the control panel too but nothing else that i have come across yet. its quite strange.

Have you tried reinstalling win98?

That sometimes fixes funny bugs :classic2:

Certainly worth a try!

Yes, but I must warn you that when you reinstall Windows 98 it replaces all the newer files you got installed with older ones, especially DLL files.

You need a program like Fix-It
http://www.ontrack.com/fixit/

This is what I use. It scans everything on your computer, diagnoses and offers fix solutions to just about any problem. It also scans your registry and gets rid of the junk that can cause problems. The more you install and uninstall programs, the more likely you are to have problems since those progs are still listed and linked to from within your registry, this also cleans those out. I use Win98 SE and NEVER have any major probs...

You can also check http://members.aol.com/axcel216/axcel216.htm for reg tweaks to speed up all sorts of things in your computer, and get reg fixes for various windows problems..
