unless you're on AOL it won't work, because they would block you out thinking you're a spammer. I say use a http://www.fastmail.fm account. Very fast, they keep you informed on any server issues, they update all the time, no ads(in your email signature or on the page), and has IMAP access.

He is on AOL, and I could be wrong, but I think AOL actually does have SMTP servers, but I can't recall what they are. Lemme do some checking and get back to you on that one.

If you are hosted (paid hosting generally), you can ask your host for web-based mail, which would at least get you there, to some degree.

Edit: Found this...

http://www.enetbot.com/

also found this, though I'm not sure how you can make it work, or if it even does:

When this article was first written, March 2000, AOL didn't provide SMTP service, so people using AOL dialins had to either use the AOL email program or WebMail when they dialed in via AOL.

As of AOL version 6.0, AOL seems to have solved this problem in a particularly ingenious way. It doesn't matter what SMTP server you have your email program set to use; while you're dialed in using AOL, all SMTP requests are answered by AOL's own SMTP server.

So people using AOL 6.0 are no longer "out of luck", they're actually pretty lucky. They can set Eudora (or whatever other email program they use) up to use one of the UIC SMTP servers, such as smtpserv1.cc.uic.edu, which will work while they're on campus or using an ACCC dialin line, and not change anything when they're dialing in using AOL.

We don't know at this time whether this works in earlier versions of AOL.

You can also try the following SMTP servers:
za.mx.aol.com
zb.mx.aol.com
zc.mx.aol.com

Note that AOL is one of the few ISP's that does not provide SMTP servers and that my recommendation (if none of this works), is to pick another ISP, if possible.
