Transparant BG...

Heya alles...

I've got this problem with darn Photoshop 5...

I want to make a button or banner, picture or whatever, with a transparent bg.
So, i choose 'File>New>' Set 88x31px, 72dpi, rgb-color and -transparent-. Now, that works cool, and i do my graphics, save it as .psd, but how do i save it as png, jpeg, gif -anything for the web-, and maintain the transparent bg?

Every time i choose "Flatten Image" to make it jpg-saveable, the bg fills with white.

I'm really lost here.

Thanks, Richie.

JPEG does not have transperancy, because of this PhotoShop will fill it with another colour (Normaly your current back colour)

Hope it helps :)

go to File -> Export -> GIF89a Export

it will save it as a transparent GIF file.

What about converting the jpeg to a png? PNG supports up to 256 colors of transparency and 16 million colors. Sorta like a jpeg and gif hybrid huh? Hehe.

IE can display it too if your image is for the web.

Hope this helps.

And what about NetScape? If it's like *.bmp ( NetScape can't display *.bmp's ), then it's completely useless.

Hardly 15 stupid people out of 100 people use NutScrape.. and NutScrape sucks like hell! its slow! it render html! like crazy! it doesnt have the goodie HTML and other fancy M$ tags. I switched over to IE in 1999 after being a loyal user for 2 years. The sooner the better!

However maintaing compatibility (backwards..lol) is important.. thats why lots of my time is spent in making pages *NS compatible..* ;)

You people must be some sloppy---- html coders. It only takes me like five minutes to fix a page for netscape after I code it in IE. The only problem I ever really have is leaving blank table cells.

I've used NS since version 1.1 (i think), and i still use NS 4.51 & 4.7. But... I also use IE for some things, like my internet-bank, who use some wierd javascript/cgi-stuff that almost requires IE (you can use NS, but if you stress it, it'll eventually crash).
I think it's because IE doesn't care so much about clean code or something.

As a final note; i use opera for several reasons;
It's fast, relatively stable, and not all that voulnerable to faulty JS.
It's small.
It's pretty configurable.

Now for the real issue; Writing proper HTML-code...
I just follow the guide-lines set by W3 (www.w3.org).
They do have a great validator. Even for CSS.

And such a small thing as a tag placed wrong, views different in NS, IE and Opera, so i don't really think one can say "X is the best browser" because they preform different tasks more then browsing, mainly because the majority of the ppl using the net don't like to switch programs for view e-mails, news <insert feature here> etc.

I blend my daily surfing with IE, NS and Opera. I use Calypso 3 for e-mails, notepad, pico and MC for html & simple coding, and emacs for programming.

As for msg-systems, i find ICQ to most convenient for me, although i don't like all the integrated features as i'm more of a "module" person myself.
Never really liked MSN-Messenger because you'd have to have a hotmail or passport account.
AOL Messenger, never tried it.

So, everyone has it's favourites and odd-ball programs they like and don't like.

So...with this said, i'm going into hiding in a non-flamable area ;)

I have Opera and Netscape installed just to test out my code :) Although I use Dreamweaver so I just make the entire design, then test it out, when I see minor problems/differences, i go back in the HTML manually and fix em, quick and easy :)

The only compatability issue I have with Netscape is CSS (although that margin gets slimmer by the day).

As for messaging, I've used ICQ since 1997, and switched over to AOL Instant Messenger once AOL bought out ICQ (funny, I got rid of ICQ cuz I thought AOL would mess it up...and they did... but I ended up going with THE AOL product, heh)

I used DW (ver 1.2) before, and still do for simple layout, small sites which are html-based with no, or very limited cgi. But when i started my php/perl learning, it was more trouble then it helped with DW.

Very true. I've worked around some of those problems by a 1x1px jpg image for background use in tables, which is the most irritating lack of correctness in NS.

Although NS6 has superb support for the html-stuff it's, in my opinion, to resource-eating for my old p200, but the slimmer mozilla-build runs better.

Life's pretty funny from time to another...

}:8) Webmaster Tip 900232;
Every web builder's toolkit should include a 1x1px trans. gif. I think it's a but better because it's smaller (filesize) and can be used on any surface... not just one colour... try it and see! ;)
