just wondering if all registrar send an e-mail before your domaon expire. i own a domoan that i no longer want anmd i have yet to get an e-mail regarding renewal

Yes, you generally get one 60 days (or less) before it expires, asking you to go somewhere and renew.

i found out there is a holding period. do they always put it on hold after it expires? for how long? does is vary from one register to another?

Registrars.com ever did that for me , they kept it 14days on hold (after expire date). Dunno if it's related to the registrar tho ... probably not.

Yes, it seems to vary somewhat. After the holding period, the domain is scheduled to drop and that can add another week to the actual time it takes for a name to become available again. With some registrars (ie: NetSol), that holding period seems to be anywhere from 45 days to ???
