I wrote a post some while ago, but now I have changed oppinions on what I want.
I am looking for a place to build my page. This place should be offering about 30 megs or more, but, and this is the most important thing, I don't want ads cluddering my sites... I already tried out pop ups, but they are kinds annoying to me, so I want to switch to a completely commercial free place.
Now I was wondering if anyone knows where i could register. I tried crosswinds, but they had to add commercials for some reason, so this one's not an option. I also looked at this twu (I am not sure about the name) but I did not like some of their idea's (f.ex that they ask you to remove every picture or graphics they consider as too big).
i am thankful for every suggestion.
BTW, I would also be willing to pay a very small fee to the host, but not mor ethan 10 dollars a month.
so list every host youknow, free or not:)
Thanks!

http://www.dim8.net - Not free but $9.99 a month.
http://www.hostrocket.com - Not free but under $10
http://www.tera-byte.com - Again not free but under $10.

Your not likely to get a decent fwp that will stay ad-free for long.

http://openhosting.co.uk - You only get a weeks trail there now and then you must upgrade to one of the paid packages either nt or high bandwidth cobalt hosting.

I'd go with Liquid2k.com because it's a very reliable server in my experiences.

Only you will know if the host is right for you. What might be good for one person might be horrible for another it just depends on what you want and need.

I just realized that Sphosting.com doesn't have FTP access..well..I guess I have to find another one..

A lot of ad-free FWP's don't have FTP access (f2s does, RedRival does for $12/year). The reason: they receive revenue from the ads on their web-based file manager, and they wouldn't want to give that up.

Never thought of it that way. I always figured warez sites steered clear of browser uploading and that's why, but I guess that isn't it. Oh well, you learn something new every day :).

its both that reasons, also stops people froms setting up illegal ftp's

What do you mean by "illegal FTP's?" How could someone set such a thing up? Hacking the server?

Chris

I don't think that's it, because then the files would be visible on the website, but I think it is that ftp takes more bandwidth up at one time because it is a faster method of transferring files.

What people do is signup for accounts with fwp's that have ftp access, they upload files then post the ftp address username and password onto a board and say download here. basically.

Hey Cracker, that's what I thought too. I emailed stas.net asking why they won't give FTP access to it's users, but they said becuase of concerns for security for their servers. Thanks for warning me about sphosting not having FTP. I almost signed up!

Where actually looking at putting in a browser upload service that allows the user to upload a whole directory of files at a time, Its simpler then ftp access and requires only a browser.

The software to do it with is not actually ready yet, then there is beta testing. But we still have not made a decision if we will use it or not, depends on how our focus group of sphosting.com members sees the new upload feature.

Hey, sphosting guy! I think that that is a great idea. I also mentioned such a thing to the stas.net guy, but he did not say anything about such a service in his responce. I think uploading a whole folder at the same time would be a great tool to implement. I don't think I would mind visiting a site to upload rather than FTP, as long as the service is fast and easy. And, fwp's have to make money some way. If I had to visit their site to upload, I would view a lot more banner ads, and maybe even click a few! And I would volunteer to test it if you like.

Or you could do like RedRival and use a zip/unzip like file manager. You upload your site (or particular files) in a zip file, then you use a utility to unzip the files inside the file manager.

I found that quite usefull when I had my first page at RR. I made whole site (~50+ image/html/txt/psp files) zipped it and uploaded it once. Unzipped it. That was the only file manager I ever liked.

Hello
Most of the UK free Internet services provide ad free web space.
*in theory* you could sign up on line and get access to this space but you might have to upload via a long distance call as many only allow ftp via their dial up.
