Should I format my C drive and do a clean install, or upgrade?

Should I even consider upgrading from 98 SE to XP?

I can't decide...

Will everything still work after upgrading? Last time I installed XP (before its official release), stuff weren't working and everything was horrible.

LEX..make sure you have plenty of RAM, high power CPU..and now your system is clean and stable ..everything will be fine.. If you don't use high power CPU.. you may have to turn some skin features off.. this would speed thing much. Make sure to check the WWW for the driver you should install, if it is compatible running in WinXP.. for now I think driver which is built to run in 2000 should be able to run in XP...

I am using Windows 2000.. and hesitate to change to it...... I heard some software might have the problem as well as my old drivers...

To change to XP.. I will get the faster boot time.. which I do not actually need (I always use hibernatation)... and some other speed up I think...

BTW, If I were you, I would rather wait for the first Service Pack to come out first before going to WINXP. Now SP3 on Win2000 is in the beta state.. it will be released soon

It's LeX... ;)

I'm pretty sure my hardware can handle XP (Athlon + 256 RAM). I'm just worried about my drivers and my stuff in the partitioned drive. When I upgraded to XP-who-knows-which-beta-version, almost none of my drivers worked. I couldn't connect to the Internet for help, can't do ---- except play Pinball.

When I tried to uninstall XP (amazingly, they have that feature in XP), it gave me some bull---- error and nothing was uninstalled, so I had to manually delete the Windows file and got someone to recover my boot.ini file after getting back to 98.

It was hellish, so I'm kinda hesitating... it probably won't be so bad this time since I've got the official release version - and it's on a CD too! :biggrin2: But I'm still worried.

Sorry about your name.. I once know your name from the Sci-Fi series they have the ship named Lex..it has a life... I think it is also the series name

Drivers are the most important things... some old softwares are reported not to be runnable in XP though.. if you have everything up to date.. I think you will be fine.

As the name said, XP= eXPerience it YOURSELF

Nobody knows what will happen to your system until you install it. :)

Oh one more thing, don't convert to NTFS until you are satisfied. I have 2 harddrives here.. the smaller one is for back up purpose.. and it is using FAT32

have old programs?=stay away from xp
don';t have updated drivers or drivers doesn't support xp?=stay away

xp is buggy for me, and I suggest you use a clean install but don't blame me if anyway happens.

visit your printers/scanner website if they have a new driver compatible with xp.

you may have to download a new driver.

Hayama: Oh? Thought it was supposed to be significantly "more stable".

In the case I will need to update my drivers, I look for the XP version, right? But what if they don't have XP specific drivers? Should I get the 2000 version?

I think so..... and luckily those that work with ME or 98 might work with 2000 or XP without saying so..

Heh, WinME and Win98 (First and second edition) tend to crash significantly more than Win2000.

I tried installing some applications on my friends computer which has XP, and none of them worked. So I would stay away from XP. And besides Windows 98 works fine for me... Win 98 hardly crashes for me.

They should be like that.. they are using the lame WIN9X infrastructure... some drivers that work with them might work in win2000..

BTW, My WIN2000 hardly crash :)

Simply boot from the CD and it will ask you if you want to format the C: Drive and put Windows XP on it.

I have had NO problems with XP that I would have with Win98SE. And XP hasn't crashed.

One more thing

I think.. sometime to do clean install is nice.. when you want to clean those registry junks... Fresh start it is.... you might need to spend just one or two nights with it to get all things back in order.
