One of my friend's site got hacked. All his pages and files got deleted. He's using geocities.

Who can tell me how to protect his site?

Any programs or script?

Tell geocities for that!
Maybe they have log files to check the last login IP, etc

there's no real way to protect sites from hackers, only slow them down. I'd suggest finding a host with SSL, this will slow them down to the point of it taking hours to hack a site. By that time all the lil script kiddies will have giv'n up. So your only problem is if your faced with an experienced and very mad at u hacker.

Probably because they don't think it's worth while. :confused2

nope, Geocities is probably the easiest free host to hack, that and tripod. Their very suceptible to brute force hacking, where a program is used to randomly put a password into the login part.

every webhost with ftp is easy to hack
bruteforce

okay better stop this now....I sure hope you guys aren't into this or you might find yourselves severely chastised by Peo!

I think my words regarding people who do this would be censored and if you DO do it, I hope your site is the next to go! :angry2:

well Jan, I'll be honest. I was once a small time hacker, doing stuff like geocracker boy were talkin about here does. I've come to realize that hacking to destroy is wrong, I've changed from a lil kid who figured out how to brute force into a young man who would rather use his knowledge to help rather than destroy. In this conversation I was only pointing out what is obvious to me, some lil script kiddie decided to have fun with a brute force hacking program, I'd like to point out that I have absolutly no intentions of hacking anyone sites. Sorry if I worried u, I'm only trying to clear things up and help out a little. :)

Thanks for your honesty!

But tell me something, what did you get out it? I would like to know how the minds of these #@%$#@&'s work.

I'm not really sure, the first time I hacked an account I was like, wow I hacked an account, but that was about it. Some people think it makes them L33t hackers or something and just start hackin accounts because they can, its like this: You have the power to destroy all the time, but u choose not too; but these people have the power to destroy and choose too. What they think is beyond me, because to me, using a little program that does all the work, and then messing up someones personal webpage has NO gratification, thats why I got out.

That's what I meant. That's why they don't bother that often.

Btw, you should have told me about your skills earlier. I lost both id and pw to one of my f2s accounts and could have needed a little help. :p

hehe, I might have been able to help u there, f2s has/had one of the better secured servers, but if u had a username and a general grasp of what the password might have been it would have been easy :D not that I'd know :p hehe
