Fast

What are you going to fill up that 50MBs with?

I run a humor site.

I have tons of cute .exe fun files and games, lots of .swf flash files, tons of funny pictures.. to name a few.

My last site was up to about 50 megs, not including the other 50 megs of funny video clips I have stored elsewhere.

Anymore suggmstions as to a free web host?

If you erase the word "FAST"

goto ticky21 or popogo

popogo doesnt have ftp. it will take you forever to upload those big files in the account manager

Oh, ok. I thought it was for a forum, in which case I would have said to use a CGI forum at ProHosting, but I guess that wont work :p .

What you want could be hard to find. Could you live without the PHP and FP Extensions? http://free.prohosting.com/ has 50MBs, FTP, decent speed, SSI, CGI, topbanner, but no sendmail :(.

If you must have all those features, you might want to consider paid hosting...

I probably can do without php.

How is the speed with free.prohosting.com?

Any other hosting that is competitive with this one?

The speed's alright. But there isn't really any forum software that works well with it.

Is anyone a member of Dk3?

How long have they been around? What is this site like? How does it perform? speed? up time? Does it have tight bandwidth restrictions? Do they support cgi... I didn't see it on their site?

Any more suggestions to compare?

I don't think dk3 supports downloads and from their suggestion board, it seems they are not getting very favorable reviews from their members.

Is anyone a member of free.prohosting.com?
Is anyone considering joining http://www.aspwebserver.com or http://www.skaggy.com?

Thanks for helping me narrow down my choices.
Any more host worthy to check into?

It's an entertainment site, so, http://www.oe-network.com/

nitroboy

it's hard to find that for free

that's why I signed up for a paid host, for only 96euro/year I have about that with 200mb and a domainname...

http://www.oe-network.com/ is down! Not a good sign! What type of service do they offer?

Not true. It works well with ikonboard 2.x, and 3.x can be setup on there (but I haven't really tested 3.x that much). Only thing is that you cannot use mail functions, but other than that it works well.

Would you guys recommend I go with free.prohosting.com and why? Any other hosts I should consider?

I know! Yet another "spacious" free host down! Thank goodness there's http://www.qwikpages.com/ , whom I am using for backup purposes.

nicolesnexus

What does http://www.qwikpages.com/ offer? How does it compare with free.prohosting.com?

Any more suggestions for:
50+ megs
English
FTP
PHP
CGI
Fast
reliable
generous bandwidth
NO POP-UPS AT ALL - banners on the page are ok

Cracker

Well, the OE-Network is back up, and they offer 200 mb webspace, PHP/Perl, FTP, unmetered bandwidth, and no file size limits with one pop-under required (eventually), but they must accept your site first.

As for Qwikpages, they offer 100 mb webspace, no server-side scripting language support, unmetered bandwidth, FTP or browser upload, but with a 200 kb file size limit and a pop-up on every page (does not pop-up again if minimized instead of closed).

Both of these hosts are mighty fast, but I'd recommend the OE-Network if your site gets accepted.

try using www.wsx.dk

when you sign up, it takes a couple of days to setup (especially the ftp account), but once that's up and running, it's pretty fast

best of all, there aren't any banners or popups and it offers unlimited space...i think...i'm not really sure

timchak

or www.bow.dk

they're the same thing i think

timchak

sorry...actually, they're closing down their subdomain hosting...

say, with free.prohosting.com, is there a limit to the amount of characters you can have as your site name???

On their sign up page, they request a username, which is only 8 characters? My site name is more than that. Is this user name going to be the name of my site, or is this just for login purposes and is there another area to input your site name??????

nicolesnexus

still looking for a good host!

50+megs
full CGI
English
fast
generous bandwidth
absolutely NO pop-ups (banner on page is ok)

I would like to have PHP, but can do without.

Your username can only be 8 characters long, and it will play a role in your site address. The address will look like this: http://ice.prohosting.com/~username/ (http://free.prohosting.com/) . I know that looks bad, so I would suggest you go to www.wzr.net and get a redirect subdomain ( http://username.wzr.net/ (http://www.wzr.net/) ). The owner, keith, hangs around these boards. You can get him to answer any questions you might have.

And, if you can live without PHP and SendMail, I think ProHosting is your best bet.

Add: I just learned they now have a 2mb limit, I hope that doesn't affect your site. If it does you could zip, ace, or rar the files.

free.prohosting was going to be my choice until I was stumped with the 8 character username limit

I was also looking into the forwarding urls like n2v.net. They don't have any advertising with their service... but this makes me skeptical.

I checked out WZR.com and they too say they do not have forced ads. Now I am at a dilemma. Which is my best bet?

Well considering they are selling their service ( see:this thread (http://www.freewebspace.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15991) on these boards ), I would go with WZR. They have some pretty good features (path forwarding, sub-sub-domains, email forwarding), and I've found them reliable. Keith can answer all your questions, click here (http://www.freewebspace.net/forums/private.php?s=&action=newmessage&userid=22) to send him a private message if you have any questions.

if their selling their service at least you have some re-assurance that their not going to pull a flanker and shut down without warning at least....that, and they have to have some form of revenue :)

Yeah, but the new owners could enforce ads for all we know. I see no sign of ads showing up on wzr anytime soon, unless keith is secretley planning a switch to using ads. Besides, wzr has all letters and not numbers, and I like the url to have no numbers :).

Cracker

Hopefully, Keith will never put ads on our wzr.net subdomains. I jumped to WZR 4.5 months ago when CJB decided to resort to pop-unders on cloaked subdomains (I'm not picky about whether or not my free host does that, but I AM picky about free redirect services that do so, since there are plenty of good ones with no advertising), so you'd better not pull a "CJB" on me and every other WZR member, Keith, or there will be hell to pay!

Don't you think it might be time to get out your wallet now? Other than Skaggy.com (which will probably never open), I don't think you can find a free host that offers every single feature that you are looking for... there is no such hosting package for free.
