should we continue talking about that here or in the thread that Jan showed us?

anyways, why would you want to hide the posts? it probably wouldn't be fair to some people, especially phrozen, lex and the other with a bunch of posts. everyone would kinda be noticed the same, because nobody knows how many posts the other person has. let's see, why are phrozen and lex so popular on this board? i think because they post so much.

i dunno, that's just my input on that.

No point in discussing it further. Peo has made his decision :)

That we should hide the text under the name, the post count.. and avatar... This will work

Yeah, taking out the post counts is good.
But avatars are fun!

Dusty
January 3rd, 2002, 14:58
Yes, this has been talked to death.

I'll ask anyway:

Those wanting post counts hidden, why? What would that do? You just want it hidden, you can't do away with the post count totally because you want keep crap like avatars and titles so on. It's still there, people will still try to increase it, so what's the difference whether the count is shown or not or whether it's just shown in your profile, only one click away? It's not accomplishing anything just hiding it, it's pointless.

I'll come to the same conclusion I did before:

Either you leave the post counts alone and live with them like you've been doing, or do away with them altogether and everything that goes along with them.

It's not exactly the rules that have to be changed, it's the people that abuse their privileges

the privilege to have avatars, the ability to shoot for custom titles...if we didn't have those, nobody would be trying to drive up their post counts at all.

DJsexie
January 4th, 2002, 15:58
i thought the priority of signing up here is to get help and to help other people and just to generally have a fun time and get to know other people, not to get lots of posts so someone one can get a avatar or a custom title

conkermaniac
January 4th, 2002, 20:48
Exactly, we're just supposed to enjoy ourselves. The post counts, avatars, and custom titles are simply just INCENTIVES to make more posts. However, some people have taken the privileges way out of control, to a level which Peo never imagined.

Oh look, I'm going to get 300 posts soon! ;)

Blank Verse
January 5th, 2002, 02:43
That's what I mean...people turn incentive into abuse...the mentality is what needs to be changed, not hiding the post count, or eliminating them or anything like that.

Or maybe people would have to be judged by the quality of their posts. Posting more doesn't make people smarter. People should be noticed for the quality of their posts, not for the quantity. Phrozen and LeX generally make quality posts, which is something you can't see in the post count. You have to observe it over time.

Hiding post counts couldn't hurt and could help very slightly. At another site where there were tons of threads people started celebrating the number of posts they had, post counts were hidden and it did help a little. Didn't stop people from spamming with useless posts though really, nothing will stop that except the posts being moderated... which still wouldn't even be a realistic help.

post count ? why would anyone want to raise their post count ?

you can tell if they are trying to raise their amount because they post useless posts that have no meaning and are really quite silly..

A good rule of thumb which is a sure indicator, is those who bombard all the forums, but NEVER visit general discussions, where posts don't count ;)

I wouldn't mind hiding the counts...personally, I feel bad knowing how many posts I have, kinda makes me feel like I have no life (IT's JUST NOT TRUE, DAMMIT!!) The general discussions forum is great, with or without post counts, and I haven't noticed any lack of posting there since the counts were stopped.

I don't think post counts should be hidden I don't see any reason why they should and help you spot more helpful and active members of the community.

Blank Verse
January 24th, 2002, 17:27
you would think that, but than there are alot of posters who have high post counts through spam and flooding. That's not helpful, and most people would prefer they weren't active parts.

January 24th, 2002, 18:41
i dont rekon we dont need to be hiding the post count... you may know the answer but have to go out or have betta things to do and it gives u that inspiration to go on.. :p

but for other reasons i agree i would be better to be hidden.. we should just leave it there and if situations get worst then consider removing it..

yeh tru.. it aint to likely that im gonna catch up to them.. fa sure.. but its still a good sign of how experienced you are and if people can believe your answer and stuff.. its well worth leaving.. but maybe once ur past a certain amount then we could remove it ?

"A good rule of thumb which is a sure indicator, is those who bombard all the forums, but NEVER visit general discussions, where posts don't count"

I don't think I have ever been or posted there.

I think if posts counts where removed then people would post less, I don't post to get my post count up but why would I post here when I get no post count when I could post somewhere else and get one, evan sitepoint where they removed post counts have not really removed them, i can't see it working as people love post counts obvioulsy it may be abused but the majority of people don't, and the moderators shoudl reduce someone's post count if they think someone is trying to abuse.

I also think you will get less new active members as without post counts it makes information people tell you less beliveable if a few people tell you certain things, I would generally believe someone with 1000 posts over someone with 2 posts but without a post count I woudl never know.

A number is just a number, that should have no bearing on how somebody can help somebody else out. Say someone who has been designing webpages for 5 years just signed up. That person would likely have a lot more experience than the majority of people on this board, and if that person only had 2 posts, would you deem that person less capable of offering support?

spitsk8r
January 25th, 2002, 17:47
yeh thats true.. but it also shows how reliable and commited they are.. thats in most cases, im not saying it for everyone.. if you post a reply back to a beginner it may take days for them to read it and maybe longer to post back.. i guarantee you that if you post to someone over a couple of hundred posts you will get a reply back within 12 hours or unless there are other reasons..

cheers, :biggrin2:

Donīt get me wrong... it depends on the what these people say... if they have 2 posts and they say two highly intelligent remarks in say the ASP/CGI/PHP forum, then judgement can be passed. But the overwhelming majority of people who have 2 posts usually are the ones asking for "unlimited" webspace with "unlimited" bandwidth, free domain and no adverts.

lol... tru tru... i still dont even understand this unlimited bandwidth thing.. ive read from some FWP's that they don't even keep track of the bandwidth, so thats why they call it unlimited.. is it just simply because it is impossible to offer ?

Yeah, it is either impossible or a joke. When they say unlimited webspace or bandwidth they may mean 2% of system resources and then they would delete your account. The whole unlimited thing is a sales catch.

There is such a thing as unmetered bandwidth, in very rare cases where the host is too stupid to monitor it. What it means is 1 byte per hour transfer speeds and the eventual death of the server.

I remember Crosswinds with their old ad-free unlimited space and bandwidth. 1 byte per hour transfer speeds and their servers went down every weekend.

File size limits aren't very helpful. They could easily split the file.

No it doesnīt. Because if it is unmetered it basically means unlimited, use as much as you can. And some people would use so much they would get kicked off. Thusly disproving the existance of unmetered offers.

Regarding unlimited stuff, I hate it when people say that there is no such thing. Why don't you just grant a user's wish and make the user satisfied if the site just displays unlimited bandwidth or doesn';t display anything?
