View Full Version : XP really sucks

Windows XP really sucks... it really does suck. Really, it sucks. It sucks, really.
I hate it. I'm gonna nuke it once I finish downloading this stupid 661MB file @ ~7kb/s.
I'm not really too excited about going back to Win98, but if I can't get my hands on 2000, I'll just have to live with it.
BTW, XP sucks. Do not get it. Stabler my ---. You would not believe how frequently it crashes. I must've made about 200 reports to Micro---- (not exaggerating). XP makes 98 seem like DOS - stable (somewhat) and fast.

Like the saying goes "I may disagree what with you have to say, but i'll defend you till the end".. I disagree with your statement. XP is a type of OS that it depends on your system to function properly. I don't recieve crashes or even freezes w/ XP. No Blue screens or all of a sudden restarts. I average around 200-300 kb/s when downloading files (When I downloaded Redhat I was gettign 212 kb/s) .. (I'm on cable).
Win98SE is/was the best OS made. But XP is far more superior than XP.
My recomendation: Give it a try. If it doesn't work for you, than your system isn't built for XP. my system wasn't built for XP, but being it's only 3-4 months old (i built it myself, but have upgraded since), XP runs terrific.
XP Doesn't suck. It's your computer that does.

XP has nothing to do with my slow connection speed. In fact, it's sped it up quite a bit (I think), by allowing more bits and bytes to come thru and blah-blah-however-or-whatever-those-acceleration-proggies-do-blah-blah.
My computer can definitely handle XP... Athlon 1ghz + 256 MB of RAM. XP can't handle anything except crashes.
When it crashes, no BSOD shows up. Instead, it just freezes. When it doesn't crash, it screws up whenever I reboot (says some critial problems were fixed and reported upon reboot).
And there's something wrong with its compatibilities. Lots of programs refuse to run - says it's not the correct Win32s format. ---- that.
So it's bye-bye XP forever for me. Some eXPerience.:mad:
Robert
January 23rd, 2002, 06:28
Why is it that I have NONE of these problems? I run my usual programs .. AOL , Winamp, Office XP, WS_FTP, DreamWeaver, Fireworks all of that and NEVER do I have a problem.
Again, your system can't handle XP. That's all to it. So what its a 1GHZ? It can't handle it. Stop dissing XP cuz it's your system. I dont have any of those problems.
LeX
January 23rd, 2002, 06:31
Lemme ask you then: how come I never have any of these problems when I was using 98? Or 95? Or 3.1???!!?
[ADD]
There's nothing wrong with my system, man, it's (near)top of the line. XP is screwed, simple. You don't see any of the problems I'm having now on any other versions.
BTW, I've tried it twice, this is the last straw.

Instead of getting XP, I recommend everybody "upgrade" to 2000 instead. None of those stupid fancy memory eating oohs and ahhs, and it's been proven to be fairly stable.

I strongly disagree. I use Win98 SE on my computer and as long as I optimize my hard drive every once in awhile and run Norton to fix errors, it works smoothly. I did not upgrade to XP because I tested it on a friends computer and hated it. It is slow (my friend has an Althon XP 1500) and has too much crap I would never use.

It always depends on what you do with your machine, and many hardware configurations suck for the Win9x family.
Plus, if you get your copy of Windows from Dell, it's GUARANTEED to suck.

I have used 98 for about 4 years now, and I cant go through the day without having to restart at least 5 times. If 1 program freezes, you alt+ctrl+del it and then that stuffs up another program or whatever.

I did a clean, fresh install of XP on C drive, with currently 3.12 GB of space left (had a lot more space during time of install - downloaded lots of crap since). Again, comp spec reminder () : AMD Athlon 1 Ghz w/ 256MB RAM. The computer is only 5 months old. It has been running smoothly before "upgrading" to XP. I was tempted to give XP a second try because of some positive comments made by people from boards all around, saying how "it never failed me, never crashed, much stabler, blah blah blah"... now I terribly regret it.
It has yet failed to screw up at least thrice a week, and crash multiple times on a screwed-up day. I am not running crap programs in the background, I did not download and install any weird applications, I've got all the updates available at windows update, and still this.
BTW, IE doesn't seem to work right. Stuff loads all right in the first window I open, but when a new window is spawned from the first window, it ends up dead, meaning that it stays blanks and nothing was happening. No "locating remote host http://..." (etc) status messages, nothing being downloaded, no nuthin. Couldn't refresh either - there was nothing to refresh in the first place.
So screw XP. It's a joke. I'm getting 2000.

I've noticed that Micro---- made it even harder to customize Windows in the XP version. When I was using 98, I had it all clean and organized just the way I like it. If you downloaded XP from a warz site (which your probably did), it could be corrupted or something. I run XP on all my systems (cept my server - Redhat) and i NEVER have a problem. I did have probs because of a stupid trojan/virus. But now it's all good.

I can't keep it up longer than 1 day, why does everyone think its the best OS??? I think I might start a crash log, everytime windows freezes or crashes, I make note of all the programs I had open and what I did to make it crash.

Windows 98 and previous versions does not know how to manage your memory (ram) properly. That is why you must reboot after a few hours because in Win98SE and previous versions, it didnt know how to restore your memory after you closed your programs. Why I say Win98SE Is the best? because when I used it, I hardly got BSOD. But I did do daily reboots. XP manages your memory way better.. not sure about Win2k and Win2k Advance.
As far as XP goes, it's the best. I can leave it running for days w/o it slowing down or crashing. I never get BSOD, I never freeze up and my programs hardly ever crash. Sure.. a lot of programs aren't compatible with XP.. but when Windows 2000 came out, not many programs weren't compatible w/ 2K as well. Time will take it's course and XP will make it's way to the top of the list.. or has it?
I have a copy of Windows 2000 Advance Server and I think it's a good program as well. But I prefer XP as an OS for my computer and Redhat as an OS for my server.

That is sooo true, I have a FreeMem Pro in my system tray and it tells me how much free ram I have and I can free some up if I like but Windows never frees up ram itself, it constantly goes down and down and when I free up ram I doubt it has actually done much because programs still freeze and crash.
Also, whenever I leave my computer on for long periods of time and say open up a 150kb image in IE the image doesn't load, it stays white, presumingly because it doesn't have enough ram to view it. Also, my background image disappears after a while. Whenever I print screen and paste it in PSP it becomes black and white. Morpheus cant display the text in the search results and the download list so I must minimize the window to 1/4 of the screen so I can see whats downloading. Sometimes when I play a song in winamp, winamp freezes, causing me to alt+ctrl+delete it which makes windows explorer do an illegal operation.
It reaaallly bugs me.

well... when i bought my new laptop (1 GHz, 20GB H/D, 256ram [gonna upgrade it in a month or so when i save up], DvD, and stuff...) it came with xp home edition and it runs way smoother and faster than win98 (which is installed on 1 of my desktop comp. & on my otha laptop) and a little bit faster than win2k (which is installed on another 1 of my desktop comp.) ....
recently i "upgraded it for free" to win xp pro (LoL) and after running xp pro... i noticed that it uses up tons more of your comp resources (but still faster than win98 and win2k) than xp home but i dont really care... i know it'll work faster with 512ram...
bottom line... i think if you want to run xp smoothly, i recommend having the following: 1GHz+ processor speed, 512MB ram, 15GB+ Hard Drive...
i also like xp because it looks better and it has burning stuff (i just plugin my burner and it burns fine) and the best thing i like about it is that it has the more drivers on it than win2k... after eXPeriencing win xp - i would never go back to win98... lmao - you also look cooler is school when you have the latest system and software for your comp...

XP screwing up is Microsoft's fault and no one elses. XP is purely a crappy OS and nothing can change that. All it can claim is the NT kernal already found in the superior Windows 2000 OS. Windows XP is just Windows 2000 skinned to look child-friendly, bulked up to fill up some HD space, slowed-down in an attempt to make people buy new computers, and crash-prone to allow you to eXPerience the wonders of a Microsoft created OS.
