I just made a bootable floppy to start installation, i installed Redhat 5.1 Successfully. Then it rebooted the computer.
But when a LILO came i typed linux, and there was a lot of text and when all that finished, a screen like ms dos appeared, which was of kernal.
it asked me to login. and when i logged in something like this came.

root@localhost#
and commands of shell work on it, but probably i never expected linux to be like this.
Is linux really like this, or i have to give some commands to configure kernal or something like that. :(

I am really fedup of this, tried installing it 2 times, no luck, got help from redhat's site no luck as all there is about the newer versions.

Please help,,,,,

I don't have much experience with 5.1 but I did install it on a test box a ways back. Try to run startx, if you don't know where it is type: locate startx

Then you will know where to find it to execute it. That should start xwindows.

That which you are seeing is the command line, and this is what many distributions of *nix are like. Get rid of 5.1, it's not worth using at all as it barely supports any new hardware. 7.2 is out, and it's pretty good.

I think i must try 7.2 ....
Got 5.1 working.
redhat 5.1 sucks, no life in it. very poor quality. Many little options.
it sucks, graphics also very bad in it.
I must see 7.2.///

5.1 is only good for use as a server, I doubt it was meant to be used as a desktop-7.2 can be used as both. :)
