I think, Athalon is a better choice. But look at some benchmarks at www.tomshardware.com . They can be helpful.

Does athlon/athlon xp go together with DDR ram if you have the right motherboard?

Definately get an Athlon.

DDR RAM was originally designed for the Athlon cpu, but now it is also compatible with P4's.

Athlon XP were originally cheaper and faster than the P4s, but since Intel has lowered their prices and AMD didn't, it's starting to look like a toss-up. Their prices are almost similar now.

I'd still go with the Athlon XP.

Funny, the Intel CPU is still overpriced. Mainly because it is a piece of trash. In recent months, Intel has been losing market share and had to cut costs.

I think AMD is going to cut prices soon.

What makes AMD better then p4? because a p4 cpu is a third the size of an athlon xp.

Get a 900mz-1gig amd/intel CPU for 50 bucks or so.

Cheap, and works like a dream... unless you wanna play the latest games. :p

What's so good about AthlonXP?

Overclocks well
Cheaper
BETTER Reputation

Northwood is a thing to look out for though as the L2Cache is 512mbs.

Smaller processor doesn't mean better.

and Tom's Hardware is biased.

Hope this helps

how do you overcloak a cpu?

It's the pricing. The chips aren't that bad, it's the damn motherboards. They make the crappiest motherboards I have ever seen.

coldturkey, if you don't know how to overclock, Intel 8xx chipsets + Pentium 4's are good for you, even if they're on the pricey side. It's a waste to have an Athlon and not do anything, or even a Pentium 4 and not do anything.

I don't like AMD's CPUs. I remember the days that I was using my computer for the Sunday's barbeque. If you want a computer that will live for ages get an Intel cpu. Although i haven't used the latest AMD cpus.

It is a well known fact that the Best AMD Althon XP performs twenty percent better than the Best Intel Pentium CPU.

Overnight i read briefly how to overclock and also read lots of remarks that AMD shouldnt be overclocked at all, is this true?

I don't want to sound like an Intel supporter here, but the Pentium 4 2.2GHz on the Northwood core is faster, abeit slightly, than the Athlon XP 2000+. The Athlon XP 2000+ beats the Willamette 2GHz though.

Well, maybe I was overstating, but on more than half the tests I have seen the AMD Althon XP 2000+ beats the Intel 2.2Ghz.

i just bought an athlon 1600 xp and the motherboard I got was ECS K7S5A. Pretty cheap I think. I use a pc2100 DDRAM memory chip.

I have not encountered any problems yet. Windows 2000 runs ok.

Off topic:

I didnt upgrade my cpu fan, is that ok? My casing comes with an auxillary fan.

The guy from the store said that If the processor overheats it automatically shuts down, is this true? The motherboard has a failsafe something, he said.
