View Full Version : I'm going to be annoying and ask about redirection...

Well I tried to avoid posting this, but it had to happen..

I've spent almost an hour looking through Yahoo search results and old topics here about redirects, but haven't come up with anything suitable. (Actually, I did find one suitable redirect; but after I entered in my sign-up info, it just kept coming up with a blank error page).

Basically, I want a redirect for a fansite. I want something fairly short - and something easy to remember! I don't want my visitors thinking, "Is it sitename.hjkla.net or sitename.jhkla.net?", for example.

I would prefer to get a domain, but don't want to pay for one just yet in case I can't keep up the site. Also, it takes a while for me to pay for a domain online because I need to get a friend to do it with my money as I have no way of paying for stuff online; so he uses his credit card and I give him the cash to pay it off.

And I really want something with no ads. I would be very happy to put a text link or a small button on my main page, though.

I'm thinking about http://www.dot.nu but I don't know; I tend to think having the word "dot" in a URL, in between "." is kind of iffy...

.nu domains are very popular here since "nu" means "now" in Swedish (and Norwegian and Danish too, I think).

And if you add "li" after it, it means perseverence in Chinese, I believe. :D

Anyway, I'll take a look at the .nu redirections soon. I've seen only one host use it (freehost.nu), but I've seen tons of guestbooks and redirections use that ending. Where do people register those domains anyway?

meow

Nu-li? :D

http://www.nic.nu/
Beware, they are not cheap.

anhedonia
February 4th, 2002, 04:42
Okay looks like I can't use now.nu ? My redirect URL by them goes to "hozting.com" and so does now.nu...

*sighs*

Just when I thought I'd found the perfect solution! :(

Any suggestions, anyone?

com.kg + mydomain?

anhedonia
February 4th, 2002, 05:33
I thought about .com.kg... But don't you think it's the same deal as NameZero? And how would I go about renewing it and stuff?

meow
February 4th, 2002, 05:38
We have dicussed that (search if you have the strength...). Anyway, thay (the kg guys) have said the domains they give away now will be forever free. Guess it's the same as the .com.ru's.

And it's not like namezero. You stand as owner. I actually use a couple of mine for email with mydomains mail forwarding and my ISPs smtp. Works really well. Unlimited email addresses. :D

anhedonia
February 4th, 2002, 05:47
Okay, I might go for that then :).

Thanks for the info ;).

I can't sign up for .com.kg - I just keep getting a page which says 'oops' after I've entered my info. :(

When you register to get an ID? Probably temporary. It's usually very smooth. (I won't tell you how many I have but it's a few :p)

Don't the usual registrars handle them? I know how to get .edu.kg. :D

February 5th, 2002, 21:31
You could go for an iscool.net- I've got no experience with them, but the name sounds good!:D

Or NetRaw I guess.

I can't access .cjb redirects without a proxy, which sucks enough, and even worse, they put an annoying pop-up ad!

They used to be ad-free, but they just got too many members.

meow
February 12th, 2002, 16:58
Aren't they still adfree is you skip the cloaking?

Buzzard
February 12th, 2002, 17:01
Yep. no cloaking = no ads. I still use them alot.

Cracker
February 12th, 2002, 23:15
Yeah, but what's the point of short URL redirection if it doesn't hide your long URL and causes visitors to bookmark your real URL anyway? You would still have to put up a "Site Moved" page if you change free hosts due to the old free host starting to suck, so that defeats that purpose of free URL forwarding services.

Nu in my language means "hurry up". (Hebrew) But I speak english better than hebrew. Anyone here heard about .TK? (WWW.TK) They seem pretty good, and it's free, and I dont think it's got ads... plus it's a domain redirection, not subdomain. (yoursite.tk instead of yoursite.blah.blah) Can someone who's used them tell me how they are?

GregT
February 18th, 2002, 15:07
.tk is slow for me

shizzle
February 18th, 2002, 17:47
I believe they are slow because they're supposed to have been running off of some island in the middle of the ocean, but I wouldn't hesitate if some dude was runnin it out of chicago or someplace.

watch out for cjb. I ended up with some sort of stealth program on my computer either cjb was watching where I was going, or it had something to do with my fax program. Even virus watch sites weren't too clear on it. However, don't forget if you sign up (free) to be a member at bravenet, you get free url re-direction. You can choose from a few different "short urls", one of which is "clickto.yourname"

anhedonia
February 20th, 2002, 05:04
Bravenet are good but their redirects are pretty dodgy.

I'd recommend http://www.dot.nu before Bravenet's redirects. :p

About the "Oops" at domain.kg....welll...that one had all of us for a while. BUT...we found that our laziness was catching up to us. you have to type http://www.domain.kg .

February 20th, 2002, 13:18
www.de.vu (In German, but once you figure it out, it works great)

www.non.ru (Haven't tried it yet)

www.da.ru (Works good and you can use it with your own DNS provider if you want it to act like a "real" domain)

www.v3.be (Never tried them, but short name. Site is in Belgian.)

Maybe I'll stick with them... :p
