I've always wondered.... how do you make money by forcing ads and/or pop-ups on users' pages if nobody clicked on the damned ads??

Same with the mailings... why send users unwanted, extra letters packed with ads if nobody clicked on the URLs??

I've seen some FWPs forcing users to accept recieving junk mailing if they want to sign up. The thing is, did you ever realize that all I have to do is provide you with a newly made account that I won't ever check in the future, and it would be like not recieving these mailings, and you don't make a cent!

The same to those annoying ads. Who would really want to click on ads that goes 1-800-FLOWERS when all the visitors want to do is check out the site they went to in the first place? Sure, it might only take a few seconds for you to perform that difficult task of clicking on the banners, but who would really do it??

Here's my opinion. If you provide a good, reliable ad-free service that your users love and would want to support, then you can just kindly ask your users to click on banners you place on your OWN pages in order to generate a little cash. See, if you're offering REALLY, REALLY good features, and it's got everything everybody would want, then I'm sure a lot of your users would automatically click on your banners without your asking. They would want the service to keep on running and not shutting down on them. There would be voluntary support! If you state clearly exactly how much you're gaining per click from the banners, and tell users what economic conditions you're currently under, >>I<< would go and click on your banners as needed, instead of clicking it now and then and not knowing how much you need the clicks.

Anyways, just my thought.....

Did you know that clicking that little x to close a pop counts as a click? Thats how. You may not like pops, but you are supporting them when you close them. It's a little cheat some of the larger fwp's use on their advertisors.

And the advertisors sits there and thinks "I dont know ANYONE who likes those damned things, and I know WE close them soon as we hit one, but dang this server has ALL THIS PROOF that they are getting clicked like crazy!!" Yeah, if they only knew....you can thank the large fwp's for screwing the advertisor. The advertisor gets all these clicks, yet makes no sales. DUH! And since they PAY for all those clicks and make no sales, ad rates go down because they see no profit.

What?! Clicking on the X counts as a click?!!! That's ridiculous!!!!!! I don't believe it.......

Seriously! Think about it...why else would they continue with pops if they know their users all hate them. Of course, that could just be some disgruntled layed off employees of one telling me that, but thats what I was told. Their ex employers threatened lawsuit if the word got out also.

But hey, thats just what I was told by a couple of them. Whether it's actually true or not, I dunno. I think Yahoo quickly drop the plops for that reason...oops, guess that tells who it was...LOL

clicking the x wouldn't register a click with the advertisor.. not unless you have a super fast connection or something..

the only way to see if the user closed the window is through javascript.. onClose or something.. but then it'd still have to go to the advertiser's site and register the click..

you don't see that happening anywhere..

did you know that some advertisors pay per impression? especially to large companies that get alot of hits (ie: fwp's, yahoo, etc). they pay a tiny amount though.. like $0.0005 per impression.. but a place like geocities probably gets like 10 million hits a day.. and thats already $5000.. they pay like $0.001 if the banner is clicked and an average ratio is about 20:1.. so there are going to be clicks

pay per impression advertisors don't sponsor sites that don't reach a very high amount of traffic each month.. they are very likely to stop service to your site if you go below 1 million hits per month for example..
