Also, you cross-posted on the CGI/PHP/ASP forums. I also believe seeing a post on the Free Services forum but it's gone now.
Anyway, Thecounter.com is free. Look into the site and you'll see where they have the free option.

the only free thing at thecounter.com is that you receive an e-mail every week with how many visitors/day, that's all

http://www.statcounter.com and http://www.analogstats.com are good, especially if you don't want to have to put a button on your site.

What?! I don't understand what you're saying here...
Anyway, Countz, as roly offered, is supported by a trustable webmaster, and it isn't likely to close anytime soon. It's just a simple counter without much customization options nor very many flourishes. Just a simple counter, if that's all you need.

who cares. I hate those counter services. I use two counters hosted on my own cgi server, one for overall amount of visitors (logs ips, so counts only once, because there are "animals" who update the site 100 times to increase the counter just because they think it's funny, and this counter also doesn't count me, since it checks my ip and recognises that this one doesn't have to be counted, so only my visitors are counted) and the other counter for showing how many are online currently (updated every 60 sec.). I think this is kind of professional, than to use this crap from various sites like counter.com or whatever, and besides those stupid sites insert advertisement or don't allow illegal sites or delete your counter if you don't get enough hits. who needs this ----? all you need is a server with cgi and 50 kb of space

I use webtrendslive to run analytical data and use webalizer on my server to do basic stuff.

You would be better finding a script and hosting it on your site yourself. Also I don't think counters are that important. They are something that wastes space on your website. I can understand a webmaster wanting to analyse their site statistics though. Hosting your own script is better because it has more function and you can edit it more easily.

However, it saves you a lot of trouble.
