how long would it take one KB of data to get from CA to NY?

it depends on alot like your connection speed, the connection speed of the person recv the data, network traffic in between, packet loss, the route it takes, number of routers it goes thru, and alot more. You could send the same file a 2 different time and get 2 tottally different speeds.

I'd say 1 ms or less, depending on which backbone you're talking about.
