View Full Version : IE window closes when downloading file?

Why does my IE 5.5 browser window close (sometimes) whenever I start downloading a file? It happens this way.
1. You click on the link, say, .exe or .zip
2. A window pops up and IE starts locating and retrieving the file
3. Your window closes
4. You choose the destination of the file you're gonna save
Da hell? Anybody know why this happens?

Do the files download, or when the box disappears, does it not download the file?
I'm beginning to hate IE 5.5. It seems extremely dumbed-down. There are hardly any preference options that I find useful. While we're on IE 5.5, maybe I'm just a total moron, but how do you disable java-script? I can't find that option anywhere. I'm so tired of going to some lamers page who puts that "you can't copy my code" script on their site. My concern isn't with copying their code (I don't want to do that in the first place, but I could in about 2 seconds by going to view-source if i really wanted to). I just hate not being able to use my contexual mouse button.
anyway, hopefully me and lex can get our problems solved ;0

Never mind, I'm just a total moron. It's under the "security options" - "custom level" button. I never thought to look there. Heh, if people are going to dumb down the software like this I wish they'd do it like ICQ and Winzip, and have a "basic" and "advanced" mode.
Lex, I also found something that maybe you could try in the custom level security thing. Open that up, and see if under "downloads" it has it enabled or disabled. That's the only thing I can think of. Sorry if that does no good.

In IE 5.5, go to Tools - Internet Options. Then click on the "Security" tab. Make sure "internet" is selected in the "content zone" box. Then where you see "security level for this zone" or whatever, it should say medium, high, low, or something. Just click on the "custom level" setting, and it's in there.

LeX I get this problem also, but SOMETIMES ... I have gotten that problem since IE 4 ... I don't know the exact problem ... but I have figured out that if the site has downloads ... jus RIGHT click on the link and click on SAVE TARGET AS and it will not close the window. Just make sure you have an updated verion of IE ... run a windows update for extra downloads ...
Sad to say it's a random thing .. but it's on the websites side .. not IE ... it' how they have the page and server setup ..

I've gotten used to shift clicking links to downloads in IE because it opens up a new window and it closes that one instead :p.

It's not that we don't know how to use it, it's that Microsoft (along with a lot of other companies) are trying to make their products extremely user-friendly. I don't have a problem with that, but a lot of companies are doing it in a way that makes it harder to customize for advanced users. I have better things to do then fiddle around in sub-menu's of preferences to find what I want.

It's too true....
In general though software is getting better, even the Microsoft stuff.

yeah, 2000 and ME is much better than 98/NT. My dad uses ME at his office, and I haven't heard much complaints from his about it. He only complains about Office2000. Some other guy who has 2000 says it's way better than NT, so I'm taking his word for it.

I'm making the switch to Mandrake-Linux 7.2 within the month :).

some people are telling me the linux isn't as user friendly as Windows, and our own experiences with RedHat wasn't good - we're sticking with Windows for now. :(
