View Full Version : Are those "bandwidth overage alert" emails by Geocities even real?

Ok, I recently moved out of Geocities because apparently it shuts down your site temporarily if it exceeds certain traffic levels, checked every hour I believe. During this time I was getting quite a lot of "bandwidth overage alert" emails from Geocities.

Now, I took everything down, leaving only a blank page to redirect to the new site away from Geocities. I still get those nasty emails urging me to look into their paid services because of bandwidth consumption. What's the deal? Surely a blank page can't generate traffic past their limit, which I think is a 1 gig/month. Anyone on Geocities getting this email, and how popular is your site?

There's an hourly limit too. :eek:

If you can, I suggest you modify your Geocities account and give them a false email address, something along the lines of adsfasdf@halsdfhadskfjasd.tld:D

Or you can delete your account, go to the headquarters of Yahoo and pay the water bill all over there servers :devious2: :p

I thought I heard somewhere that this email was fake. :confused:

Well I dont want to delete my account, as there's still traffic coming through. Not quite sure how to change the email either. Looks like it's happy being spammed for a while.

Definitely looks fishy in terms of how they calculate bandwidth.

I used to get those emails, when i didn't even have a site on my account. Something was and still is screwy with geocities.

Okay! I just received one myself :devious2:

I do still have a site there but the only links to it are webpages that I haven't been able to contact since I changed to a domain name and paid hosting 11 months ago!

I shall investigate :classic2:

<edit>

If you'd prefer not to receive this notice in the future, just go to http://geocities.yahoo.com/opt/bwemail to take your name off of the notify list. Of course, our servers will continue to monitor your site's data usage and turn it off if it exceeds the limits.
Hopefully that works. If I receive any more then they have a problem ;)
