A friend of mine is having intermittent problems getting past a windows protection error on startup. Any ways around this?

Bit hard to backup when she can't get further than the windows protection error.

Sometimes she can get to start in safe mode then restart and it is fine then. But several attempts today she only gets the WPE.

I will check her puter tomorrow while I babysit for her. She is going to have a baby!!! :nervous:

Okay, when she boots in safe mode, or if you have any access to windows, go to Start, Search (or Find Files/Folders). Then search for "*.pwl". Then, delete the file, and the password will be reset.

Why would *.pwl be causing that?

That's the login password.

Yeah I know that but she doesn't have a login password, but it will stuff up her other passwords, like DUN etc but that is no problem.

It is my old faithful computer so I worry about it :cry2:

I will check everything tomorrow, it is a bit hard on the phone to diagnose. At present she is reinstalling win98 to fix any hiccups hopefully.

Similar thing happened to me a while back.
It was hardware failure. The ventilation somehow was broken and the CPU overheated. The computer would work fine for a moment then it became too hot and WPE popped up. Rebooting did not do any good while the CPU was still hot.

I think leaving it off overnight should cool it down a bit ;)

She has it up and working again, but thanks all for your help. Reinstalled Win98 but I will still take a look tomorrow while I am there to check everything :)

Windows Protection Error? Is it a Dell/Gateway? Just wondering..

nope.....not sure we have that here :)

It is a real computer now that I have changed HD, motherboard and various other bits and pieces over the years.

well.. with problems like that, I'd say its a hint that a harddrive image should to made and saved in case future probs come again...

Seems that the reinstalling of the OS fixed the problem anyway. (or maybe it was the lanolin dip :p )
