What's better? I'm relatively new at this kind of thing; and currently using an Ikonboard. However I am considering maybe changing to a phpBB. Are they difficult to set up and install? Are they a lot better than Ikonboard; the same; or worse?

By the way, wBB2 (Alpha) is accessible at http://www.woltlab.de/de/forum/
I don't see anything ground-breaking with/in wBB2.
If you've got cash, then go for vBulletin (v3 is going to be awesome). If you are looking for something free and robust then go for phpBB2.

phpbb seems better than ikonboard. but wbb2 is superior :) you just have to wait about a month or two for wbb

I don't really want to spend money on a forum at the moment; considering not many people use my forum, and I don't know if it's going to take off or not.
I think I might go for phpBB...

phpbb is easier to install than ikonboard. ikonboard is also slow and uses up more server resources.

Wrong file. You'll want phpBB2 RC2. You'll find the link at http://sourceforge.net/phpBB2
Make sure you read the FAQ there because you have to make a change in one file.
You can open the file with winzip. Then just follow the instructions.

I wanted to install PHPBB 2.0 RC2 not so long ago, but the install files didn't have any code in them
I'll have to try again as soon as I have my dedicated box fully running...

PHPBB2 works fine, but the install has a lot of issues that you have to correct manually. I did post some of the solution on ~my~phpBB2 forum:
http://www.nicewebs.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=40
PhPBB 1.4.4, on the other side, has a really nice install that works perfectly well.
I personally prefer Ikonboard, but it's too hard on the server's resources. I am waiting the PHP-based release (Aurora) that was announced.. but no release dates planned. And the new IBForums (http://www.ibforums.com/) develloped by IB's main developper will probably be great too.

Ikonboard is a killer of system resources but I'd have to admit I'm a fan of it :) I'm going to change to iBF or Aurora when they're available or as soon as one of the php forums out there can convert the ib3 database and posts....

That has ben corrected in RC-3 though.

THREE MINUTES?!
30 minutes of messing last night got me nowhere!!!
Do you have to edit the files?
Do you upload them into "any" directory? (No CGI, jah?)
Why are there no instructions in the d/l package?!
