My new site
http://www.highlandservices.info
It's allmost finished, what do you think. It aims to be simple, fast to load, crisp and clean but not too dull and boring.
When it goes live properly, I will pay the fee to my domain name host to remove their banner advert and popup advert.
p.s i'm new to web design, so constructive comments welcome please

I would replace the red navigation with the same blue as the Scottish Flag. Maybe keep the red horizontal bars.
And I don't think there is a need for a detailed explanation of where the links go to. Replace that with other content or was that just meant as a temporary fill-in?
There are also a few typos you might want to fix if you insist on keeping the link explanation ;)

Yes, it looks more American (red white & blue). I have a feeling the flag was made in Paint, but that's okay. I think it's a nice site, however, I've always disliked the font (Times)...

Oh yeah! I opened in Netscape first where the default font is arial, so I just opened in IE and the font is times/new roman :(
<edit>
I just opened the frame in a new window and can't see where a font is specified.

So I think we are seeing our default fonts for our browser.

Hey, nice site! I agree with Jan though, the red seems out of place. I happened to notice that the yellow tones in the host's frame go well with the blue in the flag. Maybe you could use one/some of them somewhere?

Thanks for your comments guys, very helpfull.
Looks like the red is not popular, will re think that. I need to specify a font, rather than leave it to the browsers default, and brush up on my spelling!.
Thanks

I think your site is going to be centered in the middle of the screen with large blank areas on computers with larger screens. I took a look at your source code and the site is set up on a table with fixed column widths. Fixed widths are OK but if your want the site to look good on all computers its best to replace one of the columns with '100%' which will make that column take up the rest of the room in the browser. You'll probably want to do that with the text column, cause otherwise the links will become distorted. Trust me, there's nothing more frustrating than having a narrow pages down the center of your screen and having to scroll a long way down to read everything.

- Change the red color of the navigation
- Use Verdana text, it is better
- Overall it loads quickly.
Graphics/Style: 8 out of 10
Content: 9 out of 10
Layout/Design: 8 out of 10
Overall: 85% (8.5 out of 10)

Content: 92%
Graphics: 74%
Design: 79%
Technical: 85%
Overall (not an average): 76% - OK, but needs improvement
Comments:
- Font is rather bland. I recommend using Verdana also
- The website title would look better as a graphic
- Not enough graphics
- Colors are a bit too bright; tone it down a notch
- The red doesn't fit
- A rollover for each link would be nice
It's pretty good if you're new to web design. Just fix some of the things afore mentioned and it'll look great ;)

I don't understand that comment. What my browser settings are makes no difference to how others see it.
For the record I have IE4 IE5 and netscape 4.something all are set to their default as installed settings.
Anyway I have made some changes.
I have changed those unpopular red buttons for some blue ones, hope they look a bit beter. This is one aspect I lack imagination. I can look at something and say yes I like it or gosh that's ugly, but I don't have the imagination to look at something and say that would be better in green for example.
So if you still think the buttons are crass, maybe sugest a better colour.
I still haven't defined a font, so for the time being the text will still be in your browsers default font, but hope to attend to that soon.
Re displaying in a table. That's deleiberate that the site is in a fixed width 700 wide table. that's done so that it will fit onto a printed A4 page just like it does on the screen. At work I have a 1280 * 1024 monitor and personally I think it looks okay on that. I doubt many home users have screens much biger than this.
Not enough graphics. that's deliberate so it will load fast even over a slow dial up connection or on an old slow PC.
Re the flag. Yes created with Paint. How else would you do it. The only thing I can think is one of those animated waving in the wind flags perhaps.

No, but theirs do. The comment was meant for those who complained about "your" font. :biggrin2:
Nothing wrong with leaving font face and size to the user's preferences.

Now it looks better, but I see a shining red bar at the bottom on top of the copyright.

quite a few popups...

There's only one pop up, and an advertising banner for the domain host. Both these will go soon when I pay the fee to turn them off. I don't want the site to have any unecessary clutter.
Re the shining red bar on top of the copyright. That puzzles me. I have changed the red buttons for blue, but kept the red horizontal lines. there should be two at the top of the page (above and bellow the title) and one at the bottom of each page bellow the text but above the copyright notice. these are simply 700 by 5 pixel red lines.
You say the red bar is on top of the copyright notice. Well that's strange because on my system with IE4, IE5 or NS4 it dispays as intended, so what browser are you using, and what exactly do you mean by "on top of the copyright"
Or are you meaning that red is still the wrong choice of colour for this. If so are you sugesting I change the colour, or remove the red line completely.

The red is too striking for my eyes and I probably won't want to visit it if it is too striking.
