I followed a link here from another online forum a while back, and I've been lurking for quite a while, but I'm still not clear on where the line is drawn between asking for help and engaging in self-promotion. Is it the *hosts* (and only the hosts) who are prohibited from self-promotion here? The reason that I ask is that I work for a company that provides a free hosting service of sorts for Webmasters who want to include a search engine/Web directory on their sites, and I would like to refer some of our customers here for site evaluations in the "Review My Site" forum. (And no, the company I work for is not listed in my profile.) Are such posts welcome?

well you can't say go look at this http://www.whatever.com yah know. but if someone is looking for a service like yours. you can say go here it is good. they aren't that strict on it if you follow that rule.

Epgs,
Thanks for your reply. I don't anticipate referring people *FROM* this forum to my site; I actually intend to refer people who use my product *TO* this forum so that they can get objective opinions on how their sites look from other Webmasters. Correct me if I am wrong, but from what I have seen so far, seeking a site review would not qualify as self-promotion unless it was done in a FreeWebSpace.net forum other than one set up for that purpose.

I don't think Peo would have a problem with that. It would actually be impressive (at least to me) for a FWP to link to a site that would provide positive as well as (possibly) negative comments.
I'd say it's allright, but since I don't have any affiliation with freewebspace.net, I can't just tell you to go ahead, but I think this site would let you do that.

Thanks for the further replies. My customers are a pretty well-behaved bunch, and I don't anticipate any problems with them posting anything inappropriate here. As such, I've posted a link to this forum in our internal discussion forums. Now, it's time for me to return to lurking mode and see what sort of feedback they get!
Thanks again.
BTW, if any of my customers are reading this thread, the site review forum is located at http://www.freewebspace.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=20 .

That is exactly what the forum is for and we appreciate you letting others know about us! Please note that it is acceptable to update your profile with the URL of your site in your signature, so that people see it (should you choose to join in on any discussions in any of the other forums).
You might also like to know of another site that you can freely post a blurb (for lack of a better word), about the services you provide in the Advertsing Forum (only!!!) at http://www.webhostingtalk.com - hope this helps you and your site!
Thank you again for the referrals!

I intend to participate in the various discussions here, but not with the intention of self-promotion. Rather, it is my hope that the people whom I refer here from my company's site will showcase my company's products by asking for site evaluations and that the good word will then spread from friend to friend. Meanwhile, I hope to be a fly on the wall and find out what the competition is doing!
Added: I took your advice and posted a blurb over at WebHostingTalk. Thank you very much for the referral.
