how can i use ps or psp to make a transparent bg on a gif image

Is it an image already saved as gif or is it a new image whcih you are creating?

Meow's right. I've never gotten around to upgrading, but in PSP 5 it's "Colors > Set Palette Transparency..." or Shift+Ctrl+V. I'd assume it's more or less the same in the current version.

Yes, it's still the same. I just didn't bother to load the program to check the exact phrasing.

IN PS its select the magic wand, dupe the background then delete the original background layer and click on the bg color and press delete

I wouldn't make black transparent as it's used in the image itself, not just the background. Replace the background color with something you're not going to use and make that color transparent. For example, when I make transparent images, I always make the background bright purple since I've never made an image yet that's had bright purple in it.

what i like to do is change anything i want transparent to green [hex: #00ff00] before saving it as a gif, then i set the same green color to transparent, and all other colors remain untouched... as opposed to yours there, where all the black is transparent.
