Ok.. exactly what's so bad about portland other than the 100mb bandwidth and the slow cgi? HTML pages seem to load fine.

Some people, such as myself,
Would use 100mb of bandwidth in a matter of days if not a day

i'd use their hundred megs of monthly bandwidth around 60 times a day, give or take a few hundred megs [although i did at one time host my site with them at weezer.dhs.org, wayyy back when]

...that and it's sloooooooow.

I they find a website that is not up to their standards they delete it. I had my hosting there for a while then one time someone came by did not like what he saw reported it to the abuse thingie and they removed it saying that i was hosting p0rn while in fact i was running another version of the site i run now.

Check my sig to find what i am talking about.

Aaahhh portland .... mmmmm .. fond memories.

I had a running battle with one of their administrators, who turned out to be a teenager attending high school in the US, over their level of customer service.

His attitude was that as you don't pay for anything that portland offer, you should just shut up and deal with it.

The FTP service was constantly unavailable, the sites regularly got deleted and the support service was non existent. You logged a support call, got a ticket number and that was that.

I made the mistake of actually paying them to host my .com domain, and it took me 6 months of badgering, with emails and constant posts to their forum, for them to actually release it from their servers.

Portland sucks, just plain and simple. The only thing I hardly like was that you could do that stupid reseller deal. It appeared to look cool :) but everyone knows that it sucks as well.

Where else can you park a domain until you need it w/o ads?

meow:use http://www.powerdns.com to redirect

meow
March 9th, 2002, 17:44
Uh...why would I want to use redirection? :confused2

keith
March 9th, 2002, 18:21
so you can park it on a free account [ie: redirect to a geocities page that says "meows-domain.com - coming soon"]

murat
March 9th, 2002, 18:25
but that sucks! teh users will see, well that your site is on a free host

meow

Exactly. Nothing wrong with redirection for a site that moves a lot, but I wouldn't use it for a .com. I see my post above looks like I want to know, but it was rhetorical really. I meant that's what Portland is good for.
