Why are some sites called "Portals", and what's the difference between them, and normal sites? I don't get it. :confused2

A portal is like your ordinary links site, only there are lots of links and a glossy look and they also tend to leech content in form of news snippets from other sources. What about that definition? :D
Please rephrase your question to "How to create a portal" or it's OT for this forum and someone will soon make a move to have the thread locked. :p
