Why is it that web response times on portland can get very poor, but a normal ping is always around 20ms for me (I live in the UK too)
Downloading isn't too bad either http://www.geocities.com/webguy_uk/portland.jpg
(I'm using Geocities, since their server always responds in a reasonable amount of time)
It's odd - v. odd...

Why does everyone always have such a fast connection? I'm tired of downloading at 5kb/s. I say its time for me to get a faster conection.

My cable is capped at 512k at the moment - it all is in the UK.

Yes I'm with Telewest.
There are some issues about the transparent cache etc.. In some areas but here it's fine, well infact don't even seem to be going through any cache anymore.
It's pretty good in my opinion, well faster than ISDN and Dialup.

We used to have cable connection, but we've had bad experiences, so we switched ISP. The cable network we were on was shared, so with everybody sending data over limited resources, our connection was slower than our current one. And the cable company promised speeds up to 1.?mb/s - yeah right.

I might have misunderstood what you were trying to say, but just incase I didn't, cable connections are shared. You don't get your own cable line all fo yourself. It's shared with the people in your neighborhood, even that 12 year old down the street who spends 15 out of 24 hours a day downloading crap and making you connection slow. The cable company promised speeds up to 1.5mb/s? Last time I check cable was around 2mb/s.. well actually a friend in Texas uses RoadRunner and has 3mbps. Which is good is I believe... than again some claim to have 5mbps..hard to believe...

okay, so it was my mistake, I got the wrong concept. Anyways, my point wasn't that cable is shared, but the other part where I was complaining about cable, dude...

Well all I can say is that my cable connection so far has been a good one!
On the Portland issue, it seems to still be varying a bit, although I have installed an uptime script now on the server and will be monitoring this.
LeX > I answered your little question in the forum on my site now.

portland have a lot of drain on their system and not that good of a connection. that's why they are so slow. ping just tells you how long it takes to make a round trip to servers.

From what I understand they have 3 45mbps connections.

Hehe..
Seriously though, when I transfer files from the server the speeds are not too bad (faster than geocities by quite a bit)
While they are not a touch in terms of speed on members.tripod.co.uk
Also on that note, had a test site up on tripod uk for nearly a week now, and they still haven't added a banner to it :)

The reason why Portland is faster to you is because it is also in the UK. Where you live. Geocities is in the US, which is very far away.

Yes, but they are hosting 152741 websites.

Too true, I have actually moved my site off them and onto the UK Nildram/Jolt backbone. Should notice things are faster hopefully.

I live in the UK and find portland very very very slow.
laurie

Yes it can be slow, that's why I have moved my site.

Technics

It's racing for me - seems much more consistant than portland too.
Also Technics, regarding my telewest internet in this thread too, so I made a screenshot. You can find it here: http://members.tripod.co.uk/lozzaman/notbad.jpg
