Ok dangit. I went and rented a DVD and liked the movie enough that I decided to record it to keep in my collection...my recording came out with red lines thru it, plus it consistently fades from light to dark, etc. I noticed during recording, it would say "Marking" in the bottom right of the screen. What the heck is this?? Any way around this? I mean, each time I rent, Hollywood Video has to pay a fee as well, so the copyright is being paid on it.

See, this is the kind of mess warez and copyright infringement gets the rest of us into...I cant even backup my other new DVD movies (that I bought!). I have to back them up to tape because the kids tend to leave them out and they get broken, scratched, etc....but now I cant do this anymore! Is there any way around this? I dont know if it's the DVD player I just bought, or some coding on new DVD's now...I'm thinking it's some code in the DVD that my old player didnt recognize, which is why I never ran into this before..

This will probably answer your question as to what it is Webdude...........

As for how to get around it, I'm not entirely sure, but I think the DVD faw (above link) gives some names of devices that can crack it.

I agree that it's totally lame, but thankfully, none of these protection procedures are close to being 100% foolproof.

Anyone know where I can get a DVD-Ripper that works? I always end up renting them and then not getting a chance to watch them so if I could copy them and watch em later, that'd be cool.

You could go inquire at the forums at this site http://www.mauisun.org the helpful people there should point you in the right direction

Some computer geek once told me that there isn't a DVD ripper on the market today that can copy a full DVD. It comes close, but misses the last bit of most movies. Can anyone confirm or deny these allegations?

I have a ripper but it only works with PowerDVD 2.1 which I do not have. So I'm looking for another one.

This is totally not true at all. Set up a camcorder in front of your computer and record it! :0
