View Full Version : Recipient of sponsorship skipping town?

I recently sponsored a domain for someone in exchange for ads space. Their domain has been up for about 2 weeks now, and I told them they could have until today to get the ads on their page(s). Ever since I purchased the domain, I haven't seen them around at ALL, and then the recipient had the nerve to complain about the domain not being up 24 hours after the purchase had been made.

To this day, I have not seen the recipient logged on, they have not responded to PMs or EMAILS, and the ads are STILL not on their page(s).

I sent them one last PM today telling them that if they didn't have the ads on in 3 days, that I was changing their namesevers.

Now, I not only take this as a learning experience, but as a way I can let others know that unless you have a way of keeping control over the situation, (in my case, the nameservers) then you may be throwing your money away. When people ask for domain sponsors and ask for total control over the domain, I reccommend NOT giving FULL control over the domain unless you are absolutely positive that they will keep up their end of the bargain.

</rant>
thank you.

When I do it, I make sure I personally feel I like the domain name. That way, you can always do something else with it.

Sounds like a fair enough idea.

Sorry to hear that he bolted, hopefully that little kid will come back when he finds out that domains cost money, money that his parents wont take out of his savings account ;).

We have the option to be in control over all domains we sponsor, so even if they do mess around (e.g., take the ad's down and change the password of the domain), we lock it and put it up for sale when we get no reply, I’ve only ever had to take this action once before. You can normally cover the costs and make a bit more if it's a good domain.

But don't worry; we only set up a different login for sponsored domains, not paid ones. But we do have the option to change passwords, incase their password gets stolen and changed.

Sounds like a good idea, but where can I sell domain names?

Yet another reason I got out of the free hosting and free domain industry.

How stupid do you have to be to just hand something over on the internet without collateral? Seriously, I'm actually asking this question. You should never actually GIVE the domain to them, just set the settings for thier site, but still have it yourself.

I still own the domain, I didn't HAND anything over.

I thought he made that pretty obvious when he said:

that I was changing their namesevers.

But hey, it did sound like handed it over. Good effort though not doing so, you've saved yourslelf a domain :).

The way you were whining made it seem like you actually lost something. If you haven't, what was the point of this thread?

...what was the point of this thread?

what is the point of any thread?

You have something to say, ask, talk about.. you get opinions of others...

What's the point of answering a thread if you don't read what the original poster said?

and so the point of his thread wasn't whining but his way of passing on what he believed to be relevant information.

Thanks for the info corizzle. At least it was an experience you could learn from.

Good luck

It's common sense. If you didn't know that you need to think before you jump, you need help.

Look, go to NamePros, register, and auction the domain at their Live Domain Auction every Wednesday. Simple.
