View Full Version : WS_FTP and the Bad Descriptor

For some odd reason, I cannot CHMOD in my skin/s# directories because it claims to give the error:

226-Options: -a -l
226 27 matches total
SITE chmod 777 skin_boards.php
550 Could not change perms on skin_boards.php: Bad file descriptor
! Chmod failed. It may not be supported on remote site.

where the coloring of red is the error. I never get this for the same files on my previous hosts.

================================

I PM'd this to hottweelz, but I may get a faster response if I try and post it, so there you goes.

Hopefully you and hotwheelz resolve this soon. But until then you may want to try to change the permissions using file manager instead of ftp.

hottweelz said that I cannot CHMOD php files to 0777... or so he says. But then again, on other hosts I have been to, they have always allowed me to do as such.

DarkBlood

And now he says he won't let me because of the fact that he isn't as stupid as the other hosts mentioned. Hottweelz, that's NO EXCUSE... 0755 is just not enough, especially on a server like yours with IPB.

Not one single PHP file will EVER run as 777, on any of my boxes, sorry. No host in their right mind should allow it.

Sorry.

Did he give you a reason why he doesn't allow it?

DarkBlood

Well then, I guess you should take off my site then. Also, 777 won't work for people using the internet as a viewer of the page for stuff like an uploader with a login.

Yeah, if the uploader did not have a login, anybody could potentially use it... that is why I use password stuff like I do with IPB and coppermine, I ain't dumb.

Did he give you a reason why he doesn't allow it?

I know why hotweelz probably disabled it, but that's still not an excuse.

iyeru,

He probaly does have a legit reason, but then it shows that he doesnt really know what he is doing... u can still set 777, and keep ur site secure...

You guys are funny.

Sphincter (Seems that's probably what sphinx is short for because your attitude also suggests it.),

You might just be an idiot if you post about something you don't know about. So, I figure that your an idiot. I'm sure hottweelz disallows php files to be CHMOD'ed to 777 for the server's protection and not so much for iyeru's sites sercurity.

Iyeru42,

I apologize if I was unkindly abrupt to you, I actually had a very bad day about some stock market losses. :(

It got the better of me.

So to reiterate:

Suexec doesn't allow for php files to run at 777.
However, your error msg is not reflected to that
Usually it indicates a bad file upload, perhaps you uploaded in ASCII instead of Binary, or something to that effect.

The server doesn't seem to think that you own that particular file.
or WS_FTP did not copy it properly, informing the server that you own that particular file.

In any case, my reply that you cannot run php files at 777 was a feable attempt at just ending the situation immediately, due to the fact that I maybe out a few hundred thousand dollars this week and that is the only thing on my mind right now.

For that, I apologize.

But lets get the record straight.

Same answer: PHP Files will not run at 777 on any chargertek.com servers.
PHP Files will not run at 777 on MOST CPanel Linux oriented servers. Period.

It is extremely unsafe to do so. Period.

Your friend who verbally attacked me on the Instant Messenger system is an idiot. Period.

I invite any webhosts who to offer you to run a php file at 777 to come here and offer you an account, I'll email the backup to them.

Well then you'll have to give Sage the back-up then... as he will be my next host. He is the one that attacked you.

Oh that's him?

Oops, I lost the backup.

Tell Sage he just learned a valuable business lesson about "free hosting"

Hmmm kinda have to question the professionalism of this individual who "attacked your old host.

He's the kind of guy who isn't as professionalized, but that doesn't mean isn't a good host or anything like that.

Seriously,
If your host has an IQ above 5, they won't allow 777, so why complain?

His new host is right at the line bordering 2 and 2.1
