Install Linux
Then use http://www.apachetoolbox.com to install Apache, mySQL and PHP (Perl comes with Linux)

by the way if your drive is ntfs formatted you will need to change the properties on your folder you serve from or you will get an error and no one will be able to view your site.

download redhat linux 7.2 free and install it on ur personal computer. it makes a dual boot machine for you. and use linux for the server and redhat use the gnome interface resembls windows verymuch and is very easy to learn. and then if worse comes to worse you can always revert to ur windows install. thats what i did at first with a 5 gig linux partition and 1 gig linux swap file and the otherabout 52 gigs were for windows. but now im running a 233 pentium with 64 mb ram and 6 gig hdd for linux and Im working on playing with it so i can learn a little more and then im gonna offer free hosting to ppl off my cable connection. and it will be a limited # of accts due to only being a cable connection only 10-15 tops and if i get a good respnse im gonna upgrade my residential cable to the business class with atleast 1.5 mbps up and down guqaranteed and then offer a few paid accts too! and if i do good with that then I may lease a server somewhere

Yes, i've installed apache, mysql, php, and perl on my Win2k box without any problems. XP shouldn't be any different.

It works! Hey I could host off of my 26.4 dial up, HAHAHAHAHA, I think it would be funny if more than two people tried to download off of me! I wish I had my DSL already so I could go set up my DNS

you can goto http://hotfiles.com ot http://tucows.com and do a search for mail server or ftp server. There are plenty of free ones out there. Also you may have to hack the apache httpd.conf to get it to allow permission to outside users. Also if you plan on serving php pages as index.php then you will have to hack the httpd.conf as well if you need help let me know you can im me below at any of them or email me. oh yeah heres mine

http://24.24.77.86

If you try to go there and it doesnt work, try later I dont keep it on 24/7 yet. I'm trying to get more proficient in the use of these and then I'm gonna setup my linux box then.

Whats good about using xp as an os for a server. Install linux or unix.
