My first impression is that it is restarting/shutting off as self protection. And this is usually caused by something overheating. So I suggest cleaning your inside and clearing all components of dust.

Check all connections. IDE Cables, A/C Cables (inside the PC, not the wall plug)
Check temperature of motherboard/cpu/and Fan RPM's (Found in the BIOS)

Have you received any XP Updates? I know some just came across the pipe in the past 48 hours.

Make sure you also don't try and use the restart button for powering up the machine, as it will shut-down right after it turns on.

Easiest way? Open the case, take your vacume cleaner and carefully vacuum everything or you can turn your vacuum on reverse and blow all the dust out of the case.

Long way? Take each component off and then you can either vacuum every component or get a special type of "static paper" that attracts dust particles and gently wipe all the components.

Hope this helps :).

EDIT: Lol, it seems you figured it out. Heh

Vacuum = static = not a good idea

Air compressor ftw (or canned air in a pinch).

canned air is prob the best... but if you clean the computer with a vacuum cleaner and just the hose not the head than it should be fine as well, as long as everything is unplugged that is :)

One thing to try - right click 'My Computer', then 'properties', then 'advanced', then 'startup and recovery' [SETTINGS] button and uncheck 'Automatically restart' under the 'System Failure' options - might actually let you see and error message - it's a default under the OS that it's automatically enabled so you don't see what the problem is/could be.

Hi,
Could you please do this for me, this will give us advanced information about your hardware to more helpfully solve your problem:
1) Click start, click run, and type dxdiag
2) After everything has loaded, click "Save all information", and save the file
3) Upload the file to http://www.mysharefile.com/
Do this on the pc with the problem.

Nothing in the DirectX info that really helps - wait for the system to give a STOP error and let us know the error code (or just google it ;) )

Memory error then - try reseating it, if that doesn't work go through the DIMMS SODIMMS one at a time, will take a bit of time or use a memory checker, try memtest86 with some memory in and some out and narrow it down that way to the dodgy one :)

English Translation :P:
1) Download and run http://www.memtest86.com/
It will tell you if you have faults in your ram.
YOU DON'T RUN THE FILE IN WINDOWS! READ THE DIRECTIONS!

There will be a small clip on either side holding the dimm in, you gently pull them away from the dimm and it should pop up. Take them all out except 1 and test them one at a time.
