Well, memory isn't everything, but on the right card it can be great.

512mb There ATI and as bruce said memory isnt everthing. You could get a 256 mb card from Nvidia that would quite easily beat ATI Crap.

nVidia is about equal to ATI.

ATi X1900XTX is the best card available at the moment, not because of raw performance, but a combination of great performance and image quality. nVidia sucks --- at image quality.

Can that thing even play games?

I barely made it through Quake4 with my 6600GT.

Strangly, yes, it runs the average gamer's games quite well.

What do you need it for Jesse? Average machine won't even get close to pushing it but if it's 'latest and greatest' then get ready to more for the card than the system it runs in LOL

My laptop runs an ATI mobility radeon 9700, and performance seems to be fine, I get let down by my sound card more.

One of mine has the 9700 and I've never had a prob with GFX or sound - usually the Centrino CPU rather than anything else. Have a 9600XT-4 on the desktop i normally use and again I find it other components that can let you down (motherboard bus is a -----)

Yeah, my sound card sucks alot. It's an old Creative Labs Blaster.
