SpywareGuard, as located in T.M.'s list in the "Big PC Freebie List." But it's ONLY for Spyware, and is NOT a firewall.

That isn't free. Unless Garfield didn't care if people replied with non-free ones.

(I mean free without trial, like Spyware Guard, or GhostWall)

ZoneAlarm is free. I've been using it for years. :p

It does a good job of blocking outgoing requests.

Is it free, along with free UNLIMITED updates? (Norton is free, but the updates only go for a year)

ZoneAlarm is free.

ZoneAlarm Pro is not.

The free version works perfectly well though.

I have had ZoneAlarm, it was a major CPU and RAM hog.

Hm, I guess some things work for some people, and some things work for others :|

That is a problem for most people... for example one computer may handle resources differently than my computer does due to the fact that some settings for regulating hardware may be turned off whilist other people may have those settings on.

The processor on the other hand is just a piece of hardware that processes information at a fixed rate (defined by the processor hardware), this information USUALLY pertains to hardware and not ALWAYS software. Because software is basically PART of the hardware when you look right at the clusters on the disk platter.

Firewalls don't really stop that kind of intrusion unless you configure them specifically for it.
Unfortunately if you get a Trojan/spyware it'll still kill your CPU (or use as much as it can) and slower speeds of connections.
Had one this week totally wallied a system, do regular scans and stop going to dodgy sites ;)
Best bet get a good spyware scanner and let it do it's job, there are some online ones that are pretty good too, just google it :)

If you need a good "All-In-One" Security solution, I recommend McAfee Security Suite:
AntiVirus
Firewall
AntiSpyware
AntiSpam
It's a great deal at $49.99 (1 Year Download), more if you want the shiny cd.
