Did the forum revert to 3 days ago or something? My avatar also changed to my old one.

Rick

So did most of the posts

rats, I got quite a few these last days.
I think we all know why, but by saying what it is, we defeat the whole purpose of it.

I sincerely apologize for this issue. We had a pretty major crash / set back. Things got complicated when the prior days backup was overwritten with corrupt data.

We then restored another SQL dump file that was a bit older. We've had a replacement server running in the datacenter for some time now, but we've been fixing small issues before we moved it over. I think Peo has checked it our pretty thoroughly now, and we'll be moving FreeWebspace.net over this weekend.

Again my apologies. I think we'll all be much happier once we get everything moved over to a faster and more reliable server.

So this was purely a technical issue?

needlehost
April 6th, 2006, 20:59
so nothing to do with the ch/rtg/fws mess then?

Todd
April 6th, 2006, 20:59
Yes, it was purely a technical issue. Hopefully things can resume now without too much confusion. Also just be aware that this weekend the server will be slow at times as we re-sync the content, import the databases to MySQL 5, and fix issues as they come up. Sorry again guys, I hate missing data as much as the next guy.

needlehost
April 6th, 2006, 21:06
so when do we get a fws when the downtime is less than the uptime?

Todd
April 6th, 2006, 21:15
Although far to drastic your point is well taken, and we've been aware of the issues for a while. That's why we have the new server in place. We just took that as an opportunity to upgrade to some newer versions of software, which broke some custom code. We went back and forth with issues for a while, but we've worked out most of the bugs now. I should also note that the network has been fine throughout these incidents so things will be greatly improved with the new server. Just bear with us for another few days, and you should see a significant improvement.

Has anyone else around here noticed that all the
posts and private messages for the past 2 days
have dissapeared from freewebspace.net?

What happened?

Did you all have a database crash or something?

Tree
April 6th, 2006, 21:24
Yeah, that's kind of what this thread is about...

I posted a similiar thread in one of the other forum areas just a little while ago ...

All of the sudden the private messages I read 2 days ago were back to unread again!

All the posts and threads for the past 2 days are gone ....

I guess FWS had a database crash or something and restored a backup.

EDIT: Oh wierd, someone merged my other thread into this one

Yeah, that's kind of what this thread is about...

Lol I heard that there is 5:1 Odds on http://youwager.com that he clicked on the above link three times before realizing.

Any takers?

Are you sure dude its not a coverup about the hotweelz thread, cause its pretty strange that there are replies that were posted on April 4th that still exists and i think he posted that thread like on april 3rd or on 4th and last reply was on april 5th by peo. So why did the threads dissappear and not the replies? Cause if am correct a db crash and restoration of say 3rd april (3 days old) db would not show april 4ths replies cause at that day 4th had not even arrived yet.

So do you have any proof of this so called "db crash "?

And wait a minute i remember i uploaded this new avatar of mine only yesterday, so if it was really a crash as said why is my avatar still intact? Any Explaination about this?

I highly doubt they would revert the forum back 3 or 4 days just to get rid of a thread that got a bit heated.

Jan
April 7th, 2006, 02:01
Exactly, easier to toss it :S Please don't insult Todd and Peo for all the work they have put into getting the place working better. Peo has another forum *somewhere* that has also lost data.

Craig

Hey

I been gone for 12 hours & I have lost 40+ posts & half of the threads from yesterday have gone. Can someone explain?. I know this should be in feedback but I feel theres more to this?. :confused4 also my sig has changed?.

Peo
April 7th, 2006, 03:46
We apologize for the server crash and the lost data for the last few days. This effected the whole server and by that several other of my sites. Obviously we wouldn't delibererately crash the server as Todd has already explained. I lost a lot of work I did over the last couple of days for these sites and everybody lost a lot of posts, pms etc. It's very frustrating but in the end it was sadly the only solution to get everything working again.

If you signed up for the forum over the last few days, you would have to sign up again. All data is lost for this period.

We've been having problems with the database for a couple of weeks now as you all know and we'll be moving to a new server to avoid future problems.

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Just a note, if anyone placed an offer in the last couple of days, please repost it (providing it is still over 7 days ;)) I have had a few PMs already about it. Even new members don't exist :S

all a little too convinent. netcafe can no longer take legal action becuase theres no evidence! is it just me who thinks this is way to fishy?
this is a disgrace.

Jan
April 7th, 2006, 05:35
If you really think that, you don't know Peo and Todd very well. I would strongly suggest that anyone thinking this is a conspiracy theory take a step back from the keyboard for a bit.

needlehost
April 7th, 2006, 05:37
jan, answer this question
am I right in saying netcafe has NO EVIDENCE if he decides to take legal action now?

Jan
April 7th, 2006, 05:42
There is no evidence that anyone posted at all in the last couple of days before they restored the most recent backup. Give it up please!

needlehost
April 7th, 2006, 05:44
so yes, netcafe is going to have a fun time trying to press legal actions now.

Peo
April 7th, 2006, 05:47
NetCafe already said he would not take any legal action, so I suggest you drop your conspiracy theories. The matter was already closed before the db crash even if you were not here to read it at that time.

Lol guys its a crash and nothing more. I recognied it yesterday. I've seen them before, and the select missing threads, the slight setback to PM's, I knew there had to be another crash. I lost nothing important :P.

good idea. if it means that fws gets $99.99 i'd happily pay $10 membership monthly to advertise my host. It would keep out hosts that dissapear after a week as well:P

All data from the last 2 days was lost. This included threads, posts, PMs, and any newly registered users.

The most recent backup was corrupted as well, hence the 2-day rollback.

I don't know the exact time. As you can see at the forum, posts from early April 5 is still here. (depending on your time zone)

Why do you need the exact time?

I think the idea of having to pay to post in the offers section is a good one. It would get rid of the hosts that show up, take some money, and then disappear! I would gladly pay to post there, as it has made me plenty of money from signups!

But we can Pay FWS via the Advertising Section anyway.

needlehost
April 8th, 2006, 12:50
not all of us have that much hottweelz:P
I think free hosts should have to pay too, but less mabye say $10 for free hosts $20 for paid (monthly)

From what I hear, advertising here is a smart move, because of the traffic on this site. i think only 15-20% Of the traffic is actual memberships, the rest are guests and trolls viewing.

The question is "Do you want FWS Targetted Traffic in Ads?"

If so you're probably in for a treat. The pricing is a little high, but, other hosts have told me they got what they wanted.

heymrdj
April 8th, 2006, 13:20
I don't about you hotweel, but I ain't got the extra cash to throw into paying for a forum XD.

Nope it wont be cause trust me i wont pay for getting non-quality clients in return. No offense to space seekers but people come here with free web space sort of mentality and paid hosting is like rocket science to them. Plus why spend money here when you can get good quality clients off sitepoint by using same amount there ?

what guarantee exists that after spending money here i will get quality clients?

Anyways back to topic i am still waiting for date (exact one ) , because i find it too inconvinient that after so many years of no db crash it all the sudden crashes just after the HW controversial thread?

Give up the conspiracy theory. Todd doesn't have the time to be bothered looking up exact times for you, nor should he be expected to.
