I think I'm ready to start investing some large money into my company, www.CHEEPwebhost.net. I have been using a reseller, but now I want to host larger and better than ever before. Im not the richest in the world, but I can offer up $400 so far, since I have indeed been saving up bigtime. Anyway want to help me get along the way, get started with this whole thing and help me not get ripped off ;)

I'd reccomend a VPS, but if your going to use that for webhosting, it would be to slow. For $400, you can get a nice server for about a month or two. [but thats only if you don't break even]

I am slightly confused, are you looking for a design/server/helpdesk what does your $400 encompass. Is this a one time thing or a monthly recurring budget?

I have 400, and I hope to get more with this. I need to start upgrading from a reseller to something better so I can offer more.

I think you should stick with a reseller until you out-grow it.

The most important question to you is, do you need to?

At this point in time is this major upgrade needed, if not then I suggest staying at your current level and then when the need is there, you can upgrade.

I can see the want to go to dedicated. personally I have never owned a reseller account for several reasons

1. you can be found out
2. I didnt like the idea of relying on someone else
3. I had the money
4. I wanted to learn all the systems I was relying on

going dedicated is a good idea if you have the money. but the question was do you have 400/mo to spend or just flat out 400 bucks in your pocket burning a hole?

If you have the crowd and is likely to outgrow your present VPS, then get a decent dedicated.

If you really want to have the room for your host to grow and expand then spend the money and buy a dedicated server. You customers will most definatley appreciate it.

Ensure you purchase a managed server unless you are confident in your troubleshooting and management abilities.

:), Im not too good with the dedicated. I wanted to learn, I have $400 in my pocket, but I dont think im ready. Ill upgrade to a VPS with 40 GB so I can start offering resellers and more shared hosting..

THANKS MUCH FOR THE ADVICE

As stated in an earlier post; A VPS is not for "hosting" as the CPU/RAM you get for the price is normaly way too low. If you want to start out somewhere, get a cheap ($59/month) dedicated.

Yeah, you're better off with a low end dedicated server, especially when you need cPanel and all those little extras.
