Yes i know this is a very general question.

But i have noticed guys asking for low end servers mid servers and high end servers.

How would one know what is best for them?

Lets take example me.

My personal site is heavy with videos. No Mysql is needed for its function (at this time), and it burns maybe 200G + transfer per month.

then i have the sites i sponsor. Heavy use of smf forums and wordpress. all requiring Mysql DB.

then of course there is WHM. And Cpanel usage for all sites, of course requiring DB and memory.

Is there some sort of "rule of thumb" to picking out a dedi server in regerds to server specs.

Generally you should tend to look at what is being hosted on the server, and then what resources (space and transferwise) it will take up.

Something like forums, and blogs can easily get away on a 256mb RAM server, basically a low end. But video downloading, is something you might want to look for 512-1gb just in case for peak times. Spade you will probably want a standard 80gb or a 100gb drive, and transfer you can just get 1000gb or 1200gb (usual transfer quotes). The processor is where you gotta look mainly here, since you are hosting forums, blogs and videos, you will probably want to aim for a pentium 2.4GHz, though you might be able to get away with a lesser one.

Finally, look at your budget, a server like this will probably cost around 100-180$/month, plus any setup fees. Then of course you have to look at reliability, support etc. WHM/cPanel will cost you extra, though is usually bundled with some servers.

Other people probably know better, this is just my little bit of experience with it. A server like this would leave you plenty of room to grow, so it's a fairly good investment if you can afford it and break even, or even make a profit.

Death Reaper is right
With those specs for the sites you should go on a mid end server.
Something like a D930 3.0Ghz with 1-2GB DDR
As for bandwidth there isnt much to say since you dont burn much.
Top noch monotoring is highy recommended of course.
Since you have videos a 100Mbit uplink port is also very recommended.
Something like this can cost ya up to 200 bucks with cPanel/whm already installed.
