View Full Version : Trapped miners free at last
MINER Brant Webb has left hospital and is back with his family just hours after walking from the Beaconsfield mine today with workmate Todd Russell.
Mr Russell is understood to still be undergoing checks at Launceston General.
The miners emerged from the mine this morning to the cheers of townspeople and the relief of an entire nation.
They clocked out, then walked straight into the arms of their families to the delight of waiting crowds.
The pair walked out at 5.59am (AEST), about an hour after rescuers pulled them from their underground prison.
Initial hospital checks found them to be in good condition, and they were both hoping to attend this afternoon's funeral of colleague Larry Knight, 44, who died in the mine rockfall that trapped them.

It was sure a tense two weeks for their family, friends, colleagues and rescuers.

Wow , what a blessing from above
Yay for freed miners!
The media seems to like trapped miner stories now. I hear about a new one every other week or so.

That's good to hear.
I saw an article in the paper the other day that said they were holding up well... they supposedly had a couple of iPods.

I'd love to take you out for a drink, but...I'm a miner.

Glad they made it out OK. It's a dangerous job, but someone has to do it.

It was quite a miracle, apparently the space they were enlcosed in was just 1.2 m by 1.2m. Very cramped conditions considering that these guys looked to be about 6ft tall.
Yeah, good thing they were able to get out of it to walk around. Once they got a the pipe to deliver food and drink to them, they also got a small hacksaw to enable them to get out when they wanted to. But it was a safe place to be in case of more rock falls.
I believe Brant is feeling ill now and didn't actually attend his mate's funeral yesterday.

Quite the miracle, and a relief.

Shame the media had to spoil the coverage and events by being completely retarded vultures, as usual, about the whole thing. I refuse to watch the news, read the paper or listen to the radio. Therefore I only heard about this on the day they were freed, from my mother. And then I watched the news coverage.. What a mistake, they made such a horrible commercial mess of the whole incident. At least they didn't stoop as low as what the 9/11 reporters did, interviewing bloody and crying people: "So how does this make you feel? How do you feel about terrorism?"

Heh, Todd told em good!
RESCUED miner Todd Russell returned to his Australian Rules footy team today, but as a spectator, not a player.
Rescued miner Todd Russell reported during football match Mine Russell . SYDNEY, May 13 AAP Mr Russell is expected to be out for six to eight weeks with a knee injury – a legacy of his 14 nights trapped underground, Bridgenorth Parrots club president Denis Broomby said.
With his every move being followed closely during the visit, Mr Russell featured in an off-the-ball incident when he reportedly clashed with media.
ABC reported an agitated Mr Russell and his family had lashed out at journalists, telling them to show respect and leave them alone.

Yea, I hate the media when they do that, I couldnt be a celebrity.... having all the paps after me.... I would end up killing myself!.
Well they are just regular blokes who ended up trapped for 2 weeks nearly 1km underground. They are just glad to be back with their family and friends. I don't think they see themselves as celebrities. They are just two Aussie blokes who survived a huge rock fall and lived to tell their tale. They didn't have the media chasing them before, but now they do. As such, they have hired press agents to handle the press, that way they can get busy getting fit and healthy again. I am not sure how much mental therapy will be needed after their ordeal, but flashing cameras and microphones shoved in their face wouldn't be helpful.
