What Does It Take To Make a Free Web-Host?

Hello, I am aspiring to start a small free webhosting firm that offers small hosting plans (I am not sure, deciding between post-to-host or normal) for small people who just want to host things.

Now, I was wondering how much does it cost, and what does it take to start a small webhosting firm.

All you need is a reseller and a domain and then clients, and you are good to go. :)

it depends what reseller you get, and can range from 10-50 for small to medium resellers.

of course prices vary from host to host

Lol, I can make $15-20 a week, this sounds a little over my head I suppose.

There are hosts who can set you up for as little as $8.00 per month.

And there are ones that are even cheaper, whilst some may be fine others become shady around this range. Just make sure before you decide on who (if you do at all) your going to choose and run it by us, we'll help you out as best we can :).

Hi, I was just wondering if I could leech from another hoster. Like Xtreem-Web.Net. Cause I notice that most cheap resellers give you 15-20 GB of server space. Well, I already have 8 GB of server space, and I am sure I could increase more with upgrades, plus I can increase my bandwith of course.

What are good starter space and bandwidth for a free hoster that would give his clients 100-300 MB of space?

A good starter, in my books, is 5 gigs of disc space and about 80 to 100 gigs of transfer

Yeah see, but the only problem is, I cannot give them any control panel unless I make it myself, or could I if I chose to mooch another hoster...? Or would I have to program my own?

You are better off, if you plan to start your own hosting business, to get a reseller where each one of your clients will have their own CP

I just can't come up with the money for that kind of stuff though, that is the only problem.

then you cant get started. check around some hosting compaines and see how cheap there prices are!! or check out the adds and offers section on the forum

if you cant get the money put adds on your website and charge people a fee and that should start to cover some off the cost!

Would I need a business license if it was a free web hosting firm?

I doubt it since you wouldn't be making a profit.

Yeah, I found a great website hoster that I am thinking of going with.

http://surfspeedy.com/shared_hosting/index.htm

For plan 1: 50 GB of Space, 1 TB of Data Transfer for $6.99/mo

I think that this is a pretty good deal.

That for $6.99/mo? Mate that's way to cheap for a plan like that.

thats a bad thing mate

they are horribly overselling....

and if you want to start a free web host, you need a reseller or a server

that is shared hosting

That's correct. Shared hosting will only give one control panel. Yours, for your own site. Reseller will give you two control panels. One for your own site and another to set up other accounts, which will give each one of them a control panel for their own site.

Trust me mate. You do NOT want to get that plan. I know it sounds great and everything, but believe me, I would doubt it is very stable.

Cost of a dedicated server is more than $100 per month. The space and bandwidth you are getting with this shared hosting package is equal to a low spec dedicated server. I think your getting attracted towards the amount of space and bandwidth but don't forget that to start a small free webhosting firm you need a reseller package or a server not a shared hosting package.

Don't forget, you also need to have support, a good website, and features, etc. You can't just buy a reseller, plop ads on the sites and expect people to come.

If you're not looking to put time, money or effort towards something like this, it isn't for you.

I want to start a small free web hosting company too for a niche community. I have a reseller account at hostingdepartment, but they won't let us resellers be free hosts.

So, where can I get a reseller that will allow me to set up free accounts and offer small free hosting plans?

As for my hostingdepartment account, I will have to become a paid host.
