Is it just me, or is FWS loading slow today?

Robert
March 17th, 2002, 13:59
It's me also. I'm running cable (2mbps down) and it's slow loading. Takes a few seconds to load sometimes.. and doesnt even load others. I keep thinking it's my cable but all the other sites work fine.

The past few weeks the speed has been all over the place.

At one point it could be blazing fast while the next minute everything could come to a crawl... like now.

I noticed before that the load was running high at times but I just checked and it's not at even 50% CPU usage and it has memory to spare so it's not the system. I checked for network issues and found none so my advice is to do the normal traceroute and look for problems along the way. I don't believe it's the FWS server because of the light load plus myself and apparently others haven't been having problems but I would be interested in hearing if others are having problems as well.

One more thing, when you do post your results please continue to say what type of connection you use.

I'm using ADSL.

The slow-down for me is always right when it hits Dialtone.

Then thats not your traceroute. That's just a traceroute from another server to FWS.

visualroute is a program you can run from your own computer and it does trace from your location.

Ahh... so it is. All I noticed was their online demo.

I used the MS-DOS tracert command.....I just remember from a while ago I was bored so I checked where FWS's actual server was located with VisualRoute....

I've recently experienced an occasional stall through the shell to FWS and after some searching I believe it may be related to a recent change in the network card driver with the last kernel upgrade. We'll be trying a few things over the next two days and then we'll be upgrading to the latest stable release to see if that fixes it. Seeing as though the server has more then enough power and the loads been light I believe this is the problem. I'll bump this thread up once the changes are done to see if you notice any changes as well.

Until then if you notice it stall try to reload or open the page in a new window and it should be sent rather quickly. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to the stalls but I can confirm they do exist.

So many times today I have been able to connect at all

After trying the last few minutes I took a 'shot'

Todd

Sorry Jan, we've been trying some misc. changes to the system and it may cause some problems. Chances are our troubleshooting combined with the stalls problem in the first place will cause such issues until we resolve it.

I'll update this thread when I believe a fix has been found and then I'll ask the members of the forum to verify it.

What about this problem?

That was from us stopping mysql for a reboot and because it can't connect to the mysql database it gives you an error and sends me an email. That's not part of the troubleshooting but I wanted to make sure it received a clean shutdown before the reboot.
