View Full Version : Advertising Threads - Bumping

Hello,

We all know it, I know it. We love it when people reply to our hosting ads - because it'll bring the thread to the latest prime spots again.

My feeling is that the web hosting offer forums should all be - unbumpable. Meaning that all threads are listed chronologically in original thread post order. Thinking about it, this is how it's done at WebHostingTalk.com as well. And mods here won't have to deal with excess bumping tactics.

And it's not just bumping tactics which is a problem. My FreePowered ad from 7th of May is still one of the first ads seen under the "free hosting offers" forum because of the replies it recieved. Technically, I could post another ad today, without breaking the rules and have 2 ads for the same URL, within such small distance from each other.

This would also ensure the fair amount of publicity given to each ad. An ad which is only allowed once per week.

yep. Agreed. We should also disallow a member to be able to create a new thread within 7 days apart, but still let them post a reply to an existing thread.

This would be a cool mod to have:

I've tried the second one. It worked great and was relatively easy to install.

Yay It works!

Now we just need one to prevent a user from creating a new thread within 7 days hehe.

I still only find http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=96848 which doesn't appear to be what I am looking for and when you hit download, it is just a mass of text :S

Yeah I looked at that already, but it seems to be for members in general, not per forum "Maximum New Threads/Replies per Day Per Usergroup"

Looks good. :)

As much as I've used the bump "loophole" to my own advantage I also believe it needs to be closed.

I look forward to it being even for everyone. :)

I have bitten the bullet and put in a modification request for a 1 thread per x hours now :)

LP-Trel, as you can see Jan installed another solution. The threads won't be closed, it's just that threads don't get bumped when a new post is made.

Edit: I understand now that you meant that the loophole would be closed, not that the threads would be closed. Heh. Sorry about that misunderstanding.

Great, you may want to place a sticky in them forums like the free/h offers one.

I've copied that thread now so it's in all 3 ad forums.

Great, just a quick Q:

Since if we cant bump now can we post like updates within our threads?, since it wont move up the list, would this be ok?.

I see no problem with allowing that now. If you post updates to really old offers that would not be ok though. It would be better to post a new offer each week instead.

But yes, updates to offers are ok now.

Within reason of course. They still show as new posts for those who view http://www.freewebspace.net/forums/search.php?do=getnew. If it looks like you are bumping excessively you might just get a warning ;)
