Website Ripping

How do you guys control people stealing your website design which you could have paid loads for? I know that in the past 2 days of my new website being released I have had 3 people actually copy it to their hard drive, I know because they leave on the live chat code which monitors the location of the files, in many cases displaying c://mydocuments/newsite/index.html

lol, i dont think there is a way to keep them from stealing the actual layout code, but that is not the most important part of the site. i like to use php becuase then people cant stead the server side code and the code that actually makes the site function. so, who cares if they steal the layout, they will need to learn to code to make a site work, especially if it is a php site. :D

I have caught a few people trying to steal content direct, some changing my site name, other forgetting to do even that. Few have tried stealing images directly but I've seen some "barrowing" my designs.

But jeez guys, they change the color from green to brown, it's obviously not stealing...

Awww thanks man. Teah, a guy, who lives about 30 miles from me and never met :D designed that. I like it myself. He did it in exchange for ad-free hosting, which was fair enough.

 I'm only human, thanks for noticing, I guess I will have to go through everything and correct it! Also, I don't know if moneyback is 1 or 2 words, doing a search on google turns up many popular banks using it as 1 word!

It's impossible. But here are some ways that COULD help:

1. Hide your source code
2. Use flash
3. Use a design that is connected to your banner with your logo or whatver

Well no, there's no way to stop someone from ripping your website. Anyone can use print screen if they have any degree of brains about them, but here are some things to make like difficult for them:

1. Encrypt your source code with javascript, but you'll need to recompile every time you modify it
2. Splice the images in a way that they depend on eachother to work, so splice the header with the content nav bar and such.
3. Good ole' right click preventor (stops those 12yr olds from disgracing your website)
4. Flash is alright, but they are decrypters.

It is easy to rip off any website design now a day, using Firefox, File, Save As...You got their coding, image etc...there is no 100% way to prevent ripping however you can still prevent it by encrypting it or go to flash which is more troublesome to decrypt given that some "ripper" maybe 12 yr olds...the old right click preventor might not work now, now a day 12 yr olds are more clever than you expected...

IMO, any site with a right click preventer is on my ignore list. Anyone stupid enough to think that actually does anything other than piss people off doesn't have a site worthwhile seeing. Firefox, you can block the code and still right-click, so if someone really wants to rip off your site, they will do it anyway, and the right click prevention will just piss everyone else off.

theres not much you can do about it really, except tell them to take it off..and i guess if they still dont take it off, then theres way to deal with it legally if ur that serious about it,,but yeah, its pretty sad how people rip off other peoples websites.

Yup, you can take rippers to court if they take your website design without permission.

u could encrypt your code tho javascript but thats abit drastic and u could lose some hits just a thort off the top of my head :)

just use PHP and stuff. There is NO way you can hide your code, but you can Hide the server side stuff. As said above you can't even prevent people from taking your layout, but the functionality won't be there ;)

Good old print screen.

Take a ss, put it in photoshop, slice it, there you have your layout.

this scambling code with javascript...could someone point me in the direction of an explanation of how that works...I was under the impression that html had to be "decoded" by whatever browser being used for the site to be displayed correctly ?
:confused4

before I saw all this about javascript voodoo, I wudda said it's impossible for the reason stated above...and never thought of print screen, but then I'm not really that :devious2:

But if they edit the data and colors it would be a little hard to prove it. you probably have to spend money too. It sucks. What is worse to me is stealing images. I personally have not had any problems. I guess none of my stuff is good enough for them :( ;)

THERE ARE LOTS OF SOURCE CODE ENCRYPTER OR WATEVER IT IS CALLED...
but .....It's worse than BS - not only will it not protect your source code, it will introduce a whole load of accessibility problems associated with no-right-click and all that nonsense, and make your page completely unuseable in legacy or non-javascript browsers.

Don't do it - it's infinitely worse than useless.

.......................but there is absolutly positivly NO way to block your source code, unless it is done in a server-side language.

Good Luck! :)

Very true. As others have stated, just taking a simple screenshot of that webpage and throwing it into PhotoShop gives the same effect as stealing the source.

Yeah, better to just contact them asking for it to be removed and threatening to contact their host etc when you find your design somewhere else :)

I dont belive that. I was in a car accident once, was banged up pretty good.
3 attorneys turned me down to sue my cousin.

Well, I read someone posting here that if anyone rips your website, then you can sue him up legally.
For that to be done, do I need to have my site or design copyrighted or anything like that ?
I have near to no knowledge about this, I'll appreciate if someone could guide me on this.
I do freelancing site designs and programming, and generally clients ask me what if someone copies our site, what do we need to do (copyright, patent or what and how) to prevent any such thing ?

1) I don't see the relationship between rippers and car accidents.
2) Why were you suing your own cousin over an accident? You both should have had insurance anyway... That seems like a big family issue, though, and I won't bring that up again.

LOL GUYS i m not here to teach u rippping but i know and u also know that ripping is not such a hard task if website is in flash but to avoid this i only say 1 thing make 2 files in flash one is only loader and link it in action script with second file and try to keep ur flash scripting in a xml file by this atleast kiddie ripper are not able to rip your flash so ur website ripping chance reduced to 60% only expert rippers able to rip ur website.

[JSH]John
August 2nd, 2006, 23:59
We don't really care if ripping isn't a hard task, it's illegal and half the kids that rip sites get caught by their own stupidity by leaving live support links still on the site when they put it live as well as leaving links to the site they ripped it from, but at the end of the day it just shows they have no life and have no purpose in life if they can't even design a simple site for themselves or ask someone nicely to do it for them.

WE r talking about RIPPING u can compare rippers with thiefs and pick pocketers they r of same category but they steal ur website stuffs online so can can say them thiefs but i have to say that if u rip a flash website and make fla from software then u also need to waste lots of time in finding symbols and text it means u have to waste lots of time even in text change in flash so better spend few hours more and make ur own layout u can take inspiration from any design but to make same to same is not a good thing so RIPPERS if u want to copy something so better pm me first i can provide u lots of my orginal designs which are rejected samples by my clients ......

NO ONE CAN DO ANYTHING if your website design and text is not fully copyrighted in countries like holland to get a copyright of any intellectual property is easy as 123 but if u live in india or any place in south asia its a time taking and tough process with lots of formalities with a normal average time of 3 months.
